DVD SET COMING SOON??
Does anyone know if this AWESOME show is coming out on DVD? And when?
shareI want my "China Beach" DVD!!! No word yet on a release date. I was checking on amazon.com and when you look it up it will tell you it hasn't been released yet, but enter your email address and they will notify you when it does become available, PLUS they will let the studio know how many people are interested in having it released... Tell others!
shareI just loved the series when it aired on Sky One in Europe. I hope some station in Sweden will buy it in and show it. I´m keeping my eyes open for that DVD.
shareI've signed up, but have also done searches on other sites which are offering complete boxed set of dvds for approx 34 bucks. don't know if u.s. companies or scams. can't wait for this to come out. do you know, have the dvds been previously released?
shareI would really like to see this outstanding series preserved on DVD. This was one of the best shows to ever air on television. It was moving and thought provoking. I hope it's release isn't too far off.
shareChina Beach was truly a great series...
Dana Delaney, Robert Picard, Michael Boatman, Marg Helgenberger, Brian Wimmer, Nan Woods, and so many other great actors... I miss them all.
Seeing Robert Picardo in Voyager and Marg in CSI and Michael in Spin City
these past few years has been a great treat.
I just cannot understand the mindset that keeps such talent under wraps.
Why don't they put out the DVDs for this series already? There is so much
DVD product produced that falls so far below the quality of China Beach to be kind in saying so.
Who holds the strings to getting this done anyway? and how can the average
individual fan influence the process? Is there any means to influence
getting this series to DVD? Who needs to be convinced that they will reap profits from their efforts here?
The same thing applies to the Perfect Strangers TV series (1986)...
Some of the best comedy of the current era and it's left to catch dust.
Go figure... how frustrating.
I absolutely loved this show and can't believe it has not been released on DVD. The writing was brilliant, the acting supurb and the way it was filmed...all combined pulled you in and refused to let go. So many other series from the late 80's and early 90's are out on DVD, what is the hold-up with this fantastic show!
Who decides when or if a show is released on DVD? The powers-that-be need to get a clue!
The main reason China Beach isn't available on DVD is the same reason that a lot of other wonderful shows aren't available: music rights.
One of the (many) things that seperated China Beach from the rest of the pack was the authentic period songs that served as background music for each episode. Unfortunately, the music rights to those songs were never negotiated to include the rights to their use on DVD's--DVD's didn't exist back in the late 80's when China Beach was being produced.
Music rights issues are frequently the culprit when popular TV shows aren't available on DVD. Moonlighting, for example, was delayed for years because series creator/executive producer Glen Gordon Caron refused to re-record the background music to get around rights issues--the music of Moonlighting was frequently the lynchpin of an episode. It took forever for the rights to be negotiated for Moonlighting, but it was finally accomplished and the show will be released on DVD later this year. Hopefully, John Sacret Young and William Broyles, Jr. will someday negotiate the same rights for China Beach.
They could always do what was done for Tour of Duty when it was released on DVD, change all of the original music to generic music. Pretty horrible I know but at least it gets it released.
shareHi Thank you so much!!! I have been trying to think of the other series that was out at about the same time on Viet Nam. I loved both of them. But I could not remember the name "Tour of Duty." So sorry to hera that the great 60's music will not be there. :-{ But on another note. it looks like Netflix is offering Season one of "China Beach" in thier line up. http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?trkid=73&movieid=70019967
Hope that link works.
Again thanks for the name. I lived through that erra. Was a tough time, with alot of uncertainty. I watch every Viet Nam story, and am always so grateful & thankful that Nixon ended the War when he finally did. That I did not have to go. Unlike today, when those kids came home, NOBODY cheered them. The were spit on, and jeered at, Taunted. They were mostly just kids like me who were unlucky and were drafted.
So glad these two shows were done, so glad they are being mad available.
Thanks for letting me rant...

I love this show but the only copies you can get of this now are fake copies off the internet. Come on WB.
I have signed petition after petition and contacted Warner Brothers to request it to no avail.
A wonderful show that not too many people know about. A wonderfully written show. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD.

I have the full set of Tour of Duty on DVD I miss the original music but glade to have the shows without all the ads.

Thank you so very much for this explanation. I have wanted this series on video or DVD for YEARS and many times wondered why it has not been released. I did find it through google, but the companies' sites always looked fishy to me...and the cost was over $200. Finally I bought one for $69 (I figured losing $70 was better than losing $200), thinking I would never receive anything. After a few weeks, I did receive 2 boxes of DVD's. Some are ok, some don't play, and there are episode repeats all throughout. Poor quality (like TV reception back in the 60's). Basically, these are recorded from TV, and even show the "G" rating in upper left corner, and the channel icon in lower right. I guess I wanted to see it again so badly, I am almost content for the moment. I suppose this is better than nothing. At least I am having fun remembering all the characters, episodes, and great music from the original. These will do just until the real DVD's come out, then in the trash they go! Here's hoping the music rights issue will be solved in my lifetime.
sharePafilafika did you go and forget Jeff (aka Dodger) too?? : ) Can you tell which of our China boys I had a crush on in the 8th grade when he was pushing 40 unbeknownst to me?
Wakener I've been wondering about Nan too ever since I first came on here years ago and found zippo on her too. I also have just left a post on the message board with her page here with the show. I am glad I'm not the only one wanting to know what happened to our girl during all of these years. I may try a search online but I doubt I'll find anything, if I do I'll pass it along to you. And I'll agree with you about having them do things slow and right with the show. I just caught it right before 9/11 happened so I'm not terribly eager to go another round with the whole gang just yet but I wouldn't mind seeing the My Fair Lady episode again especially since Robert sings in it. And I still love hearing Reflections every time they play it on the radio.
I have all but 4 episodes on tape. If they don't release, I may. But proceeds will go to the VietNam Helicopter pilots assn.
shareDo you mean you have all four seasons? I'd definitely be interested in purchasing them, if you ever have them available, contact me. I've got a lot of friends whose names are on that black wall in D.C. and I'd be honored to support the helicopter pilots of Vietnam.

I would rather give my money to that cause than to pretty much anyone else.
shareI recall reading an interview with Dana Delaney where they had a bit of an impromptu cast reunion, about the time Marg Helgenberger was starting CSI, if I recall correctly. As I remember, Dana said that no one had stayed in touch with her, and that she had gone back to Chicago. I guess maybe Hollywood just didn't suit her? At any rate I think it is wonderful that she could make such a contribution to one of the most memorable shows that I have ever seen. Few people are so lucky as to leave that kind of a mark in entertainment. :)
shareI COMPLETELY agree that if China Beach *could* only be released if the music were changed, then it should NOT be released at all. I am heartbroken as to how Tour of Duty and Wiseguy -- two of my other favorite shows -- were ruined by altering music. Fortunately, I have all of them on vhs from the initial television broadcasts which are in good condition. I have purchased the dvds in each case and have thought about syncing the vhs tracks to the better dvd images when playing the episodes.
Y'know what would be easier? Charge an additional ten bucks per dvd season set to pay for the music rights! But they won't do that. Most older shows have a limited audience (so the powers that be believe) and won't pay additional for a dvd boxed set.
There are of course flashy exceptions such as Miami Vice (costlier dvd set) with full music intact. Like C.B. & T.o.D., period music IS integral to that show. Imagine Miami Vice and C.B. with dubbed over elevator music! Now imagine a season set of C.B. with all music intact; an hour long documentary on the making of the show and interviews with the creators and the major principal actors and audio commentaries on selected episodes. Worth an extra ten bucks to you??

Ditto to Barron-5`s post about what is holding the DVD release, and a way to get it performed.
I got the first season of *WKRP* on DVD and ALL THE MUSIC has been remixed with studio jam sessions, NO LYRICS, just noise. Here was a show as much about the music of the era as the people, but because of licensing and royalties the DVD producers could not release it cost-effectively. I will not be getting any other seasons.
The same with *Bussom Buddies* (admitted schlock TV but to see the genius of Tom Hanks as an unknown and the eye candy of Donna Dixon, YUM), granted the music had limited storyline impact but the producers of the DVD went with a different studio session opening than Billy Joel`s "My Life" which spoils the start of every episode for me now, I skip it (thank goodness for chapters on DVD`s) and go right to the story.
I would be more than willing to spend an extra amount for C.B. if the music remains as it should be, otherwise the stories will not have the impact they so rightly were meant to have. Take the music away from The Godfather trilogy, and it would not be in the top 10 best films on IMDb. The same with Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, etc.
An aside, I remember an episode (with Rikki Lake as a primary source of the story--I am sure some will come up with the title...) where the show was presented in reverse chronological order, that is we see the end of the story first, then proceed to set-up scenes earlier in time to the ending, then more set-up to the set-ups, so the show ends with the beginning of the plot thread. I remember Seinfeld did that for an episode and the critics praised the ingenuity, hey Seinfeld was the late 1990`s, C.B. did that first.
