I've always wondered why the parts when he's talking about this experience to the camera has him much older than the scenes when he's camping? Did they film that part after the release? Was the release delayed and they added it? Does anyone know?? This is driving me crazy!! Thanks.

Well, it's suposed to be about his summer experience.
Obviously you get older during the summer, puberty and whatnot.
By the time they were done filming the movie he probobly blossomed into a young man lol, and did the narration.
It was probobly planned.

I agree with you there about that but the way it looks that the film was done was like a year or two after they had already filmed the movie and then edited where he was narrating the movie.

Sean Astin is older in the wraparound scenes because they were filmed almost a year after the main story. they waited to film them since the main story took place in the "past."

I really disliked the narration scenes it slowed the movie down if I had been the director i would have cut them since when you cut out of a good entertaining story it takes time for the audience to get back into it and they really did not contain any really important points

shareI always thought the same thing. I'm not talking about the scenes where he's narrating either. There's certain scenes of the movie where Alan and Mitch look and sound much younger. Then there's scenes where they look older and their voices are much deeper. Bad editing on that part. Otherwise, I've always loved this movie. Grew up watching it all the time.
shareThe film was shelved before it was complete and was probably only taken out due to Kevin Bacon and Sean Astin's rising profiles in the industry. Since it was two years later though, they couldn't reshoot anything new with Aston and gang since they had grown up in the ensuing years, so they stuck him doing narration "reminiscing" of his previous adventure instead. Even with the narration though, the film still feels unfinished due to the tacked-on nature of the narration as well as the lack of any real ending to the adventure.

This was only his second released movie (after Goonies), but you can't claim that rose his start in relation to this movie because it would have been smarter to release it immediately after Goonies to capitalize on the success of that movie. Waiting two years doomed this movie.
As for Kevin Bacon, his star was rapidly falling when this movie came out. agin, they would have wanted to capitalize on Footloose by releasing this in 1985 or 1986...not wait until after he had done Quicksilver (which even he is embarrassed about) and was stuck taking bit parts in Planes Trains iand Automobiles
I would hardly consider Kevin Bacon a "falling star" (rapidly) or a guy relegated to "bit roles" seeing he went on to roles in Tremors and Flatliners which both did remarkably well at the box office. This not factoring in that he was in blockbusters like JFK, A Few Good Men and Apollo 13 in the 90s and Hollowman, Mystic River, Crazy Stupid Love and X-Men: First Class many years after.

That's 2 billion dollars in box office since White Water Summer. That's three decades after Footloose....And the guy STILL gets roles over 35 years on from Animal House.
Guess we all see things differently...but, he's been one of a few stars whose films have grossed like a combined billion dollars in more than one decade...

You hit it on the nose, the release was delayed and it was added to the film. I worked on the film during the entire originally scripted filming, but was not involved in the post filming production process. From my perspective, it was poorly done film that was only salvaged by later adding Sean Austin's narrative portions to the story to fill holes in the original story after the fact. From what I remember, none of that was in the original script. There was also a big rush to complete the filming due to the onset of early winter in the Sierra mountains where the filming took place. Sean was a young kid during the original filming, so I remember being very surprised at his older narrative persona when the movie was released. All the cast members were really great. I will tell you something about Kevin Bacon. He was the definition of a consummate professional. He went above and beyond to make everyone in the crew comfortable. I personally witnessed him stand up for some of the crew that were not being treated fairly by the powers that be. I will never forget his kind professional demeanor. It has been a pleasure watching his continued success over the years. It's also nice to see that Sean Austin grew up to have such a nice career.
