Total cheese fest, how did this film win awards
Terrible acting, terrible music, and it is an 8.0?
shareTerrible acting, terrible music, and it is an 8.0?
shareWell, what movies do you consider great? People weren't as cynical about everything back in the 80s. I consider The Untouchables a classic. It's not perfect but few movies are.
shareThe most this film got were best supporting actor awards for Sean Connery as a thank you for all his years of entertainment. I don't agree he should've won them. Especially not over Denzel Washington's amazing performance as Steve Biko in Cry Freedom.
Green Goblin is great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1L4ZuaVvaw
Without a doubt, one of the most overrated films EVER, on imdb and elsewhere...
BUT, admittedly I'm not a huge De Palma fan. He overfills his films with Clichés and uses style to overcome them. It DOES work at times, I wouldn't say I hate the guy. Carlitos Way is tremendous and Carrie, Scarface and Casualties Of War all are really solid films. I just think when he lays an egg, it's a real stinker... And he's done quite a few of them. Untouchables is just awful. Aside from a few good scenes, it's a snooze fest.
"Untouchables is just awful."
Your taste is clearly in your colon.
I feel like most of the people can't differentiate butter to margarine, maple sirup to sirup, and purple thing to grape juice... you're one of these people.
shareYou're very obviously an absolute moron, and as a result your opinions about THE UNTOUCHABLES - or any other subject - mean less than nothing. Also, learn to spell "syrup", dolt.
shareI've repeatedly watched this film over and over since I saw it as a small kid and far from boring to me. And I think it's far underrated.
shareI agree with kmags84 (however, I think Scarface is also hugely overrated). I think DePalma does certain iconic scenes well and hides behind them. His films are not very good (with one, maybe two exceptions). I walked out after Untouchables thinking that I mostly enjoyed myself but that it was a bad movie.
I have always been shocked at the praise his movies get.
Have you seen Dressed to Kill or Blow Out?
shareI completely disagree.
This movie was awesome.
Love this movie. Seen it many times including when first released.
sharethis movie haven't aged well at all
_______
"if seagal was thinner this could have been a theatrical product."
Really? I think it has aged very well actually, the music, the magnificent wardrobe, the stylistic directing, sheen cleanliness of it reminds me of film noir to an extent, and it reminds me of Boardwalk Empire that I think they tried to copy this film's look, plus the memorable quotes and iconic scenes are great.
shareWhat makes you say so? I saw it as a new film, and loved it, and have seen it a few times since, most recently within the past 2 or 3 years, and think it stands as one of the better films of its genre. I'm curious what about it you think feels dated or poorly done.
shareit was one of my favorite movies when it came out when I was a kid.
I'll try watching it again, see how it holds up.
Some movies just don't hold up. I watched Ferris Beuller the other day and wondered to myself how did I ever like this. Bueller is a top class a-hole who had no likable characteristics. But I grew up during that time and a lot of teens were like that so maybe back then it was no big deal. LOL.

I had the same reaction rewatching it. As a teen it was really fun and hilarious. Now... I don't see the appeal.
Ennio Morricone terrible music?
shareI can’t even remember the music. The movie is so bad it’s just laughably bad. How such an amazing cast could make such a cheeseball film is puzzling.
The cinematography is atrocious. It’s classic De Palma over acting, over the top cheese.
Much like Scarface was. Although Scarface’s cheesiness is somehow more entertaining because of Pacinos hilarious over the top portrayal of a Cuban. The Untouchables is frustrating because it should be great. It’s hard to sit through even once.
This post and Destinata's below sum up my very low opinion of this film. De Palma sucks.
shareI was in a movie house when this film was late in it's first run, and at some point people started to burst out laughing. I'm certain it wasn't meant to be funny, but it was so shallow and dumb it was funny.
shareI, too, laughed more than once when I wasn't supposed to. The people I saw it with really liked it though.
I am a big fan of Film Noir (we have a yearly Noir film fest where I live) and I have seen some very bad ones. I'd rather rewatch those over this. This film has a few moments but I hardly even consider it Noir (as it is categorized by many).
Wrong, the dark knight is a cheese fest.
The untouchables is purposefully tongue in cheek and stylized, which is what makes it work.
