The 'telescreens' make no sense

What kind of a 'video phone system' is that?

Would YOU want someone to be able to just suddenly see you and what you are doing without any warning?

All phone calls have always worked in such a way that you have the choice of whether to answer the call or not, you have the choice of WHEN to answer if you decide to answer, and so on. NO phone or video call should EVER be controllable fully from the OTHER side!

Think of the possibilities of ABUSE and intrusion! Invasion of privacy happens even in this movie! Though why the heck would the president of a whole planet even install a video screen like that on his darn toilet? Also, couldn't he just have a voice-only version, or at least have no camera, so he can see the screen but no one can see him?

Also also, isn't it a bit weird how the video screen seems to be the place the caller can 'see through', when normally, you'd have to look into the CAMERA, which can't be in the same place as the screen for obvious reasons, so you'd always look a bit 'off'?

In any case, it makes NO SENSE to have ANY kind of phones (even voice only) that do not let the recipient of the call CONTROL the call! Let alone a friggin' PRESIDENT or any other people in power.. they should not only know better, but also be able to afford things to be customized exactly the way they like them.

I know, comedy and all, but someone has to point out these things that make absolutely no sense.

"can't be in the same place as the screen for obvious reasons"

This is a huge problem i currently face at work and one i hope they will have solved by the time we have spaceships with ludicrous speed.

It makes sense from higher up interfer with you. I know enough bosses who would love to have this function! So in a corporate world as depicted in Spaceballs, it is just logical. The only hilarious part is that even the President does not have a reject button.
