A delight

A swashbuckling comic love story that only seems to get more unique with age, “The Princess Bride” details a grandfather telling his sick grandson the tale of a stable boy (Cary Elwes) who risks everything to save his long lost love (Robin Wright) from a variety of quirky and/or nefarious characters, including Chris Sarandon’s lead villain, Prince Humperdinck. Elwes and Wright have an immediately winning chemistry; it’s hard not to get lost in their star-crossed staring at each other right along with them. It’s inconceivable not to mention the supporting cast though, particularly Wallace Shawn upping the pretentiousness to an all-time high as a small-time opportunist criminal, Andre the Giant as his large, dimwitted, but possibly also lovable accomplice, and Mandy Patinkin, whose revenge-seeking Inigo Montoya is just as rootable as our lead hero. Billy Crystal and Carol Kane also make a great cameo later on. The second film in the incredible start of director Rob Reiner, “Bride” is wall to wall sword fighting, a winking sense of humor, suspenseful locales, and a testament to people finding their way back to love. It’s got something for everybody, and it’s hard not to get swept up in its old fashioned, but tremendously entertaining, sensibilities.
