It's an 80s movie. The score is 'dated' but no more so than most movies from this era. I'm a big fan of 70s/80s synth artists such as Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Vangelis so I actually enjoy the synth score. Then again, I have been watching this movie since my early childhood in the late 80s so I can't really imagine changing anything about it.
Specific parts of the score which I enjoy:
The sword fight scene (I love the little fanfare that plays when Wesley switches hands!)
Setting alight 'Dread Pirate Roberts' at the castle gate
Vizzini's outlining his rationale for determining the location of the poison
Inigo's revenge scene
I feel that the score elevates the sense of drama in these scenes. I also enjoy the manner in which the score accentuates the actions of the characters without being too cheesy.
Most modern orchestral scores are generic, overwrought and boring so I wouldn't replace the unique existing score with an orchestral score just for the sake of it.
