Why I hate this film..

I remember watching this film in high school around 2007. It was for a theater club's movie night. I was told it was one of the best movies ever. People, however, treated it that night as a rocky horror screening and I was so confused. Why was this funny? I saw how over the top it was and thought "okay, it's so bad it's good". Then I read reviews for it. People took it seriously.. this just turned me off because I couldn't figure this movie out.

So tell me, IMDB, why is this a good movie?

Just saw it the first time and I'm over 40. Though I appreciated some aspects of it, it didn't grab me. I believe if I had seen it as kid back in the 80s, I would be much more into it now.

When it was released, we had a lot of VHS rentals of fairy tale stories. Shelly Duvall even had a series. They played it straight for kids. This took the genre and added a nice sense of humor about itself. Plus, most of us alive at the time were big fans of Fred Savage which helped.

I enjoy it for the characters, dialogue, and odd sense of fairy-tale esthetic.
