@OP: This doesn't get replayed often because a lot of the dialogue (e.g. Dracula calling the little girl a bitch) is very politically incorrect by today's standards, and even though this movie was geared towards kids I don't think this would be considered a movie to show young kids now.
That being said, it's a classic and I think it's fine for kids 10-12+ There aren't very movies like this. You probably haven't heard of it since it doesn't get replayed often, but for us born in the early 80s it was a really popular movie. I remember watching like 4-5 times when I was younger.
I was born in 83 and hadn't heard of it until a few years ago, like I mentioned in a previous post. I quite enjoy 80's horror movies and kids adventure movies, but this one never seemed to be on the shelves at video stores or for sale.
I bought it without seeing it though a few years back and boy, am I glad I did that. It's full of 80's awesomeness and Dracula is one of the best I've ever seen. Even though this movie is geared towards kids, they made Dracula unnerving without being overly violent. I think this is one of the problems with a lot of horror movies nowadays. They put so much emphasis on having the main villain(s) being overly violent and not psychologically scary.
me.
midwest: Indeed, the Dracula in this one is one of the best portrayals out there. In fact, I've been on some horror websites where people say it IS the best portrayal (my personal favourite is Klaus Kinski in Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht). You're absolutely right, even as an adult this movie still manages to create a feeling of dread and oppression even without violence. It was directed masterfully and managed to, in my opinion, perfectly do everything it set out to: 1. Be a homage to classic 30s and 40s horror films. 2. Be a "horror" film that was still kid friendly and yet appeals to adults.
I really wish this had a sequel. That would have been awesome.
Yeah, a sequel would be great. All the kid characters could just play parents, or something like that.
me.
Would be interesting but will probably not happen.
One of the best movies I seen growing up. The 20year anniversary DVD is the best version available. I seen it on TV a few times and it hurt watching the version they showed... My VHS recording played better. That was over 15 years old itself lol
Were the Monster Squad. Music creds kick in. My sister would rewind that part so many times ahahahahah
Anytime I hear Bogus, I do a Frankie Bogus! Bogus.
I remember growing up magic in movies my imagination on fire I can still see some of that magic.
It's a great show, would love to see a reboot.
