Does this still hold up?
For anyone who saw this as a kid in the 90's, how well does this movie hold up for you in 2018? Is it still effective?

shareI watched it a couple times recently, and it does not match the spooky memories that the gore effects impressed upon our younger minds. Thin characters, flat-out terrible cinematography, and a pervasive shallowness that pales in comparison to the truly dark source material.
shareI still enjoy it, it looks dated for sure but that doesn't bother me.
shareIt still holds up fine. People are quick to dismiss it for the gore sometimes.
sharePinhead and the other Cenobites are quite memorable villains.
shareFirst time I saw this was 2012, I was about 18. It freaked me out and it’s images stuck with me for a couple of days. A friend of mine watched it for the first time here recently, and it scared him too.
Sure there are a couple places where I might roll my eyes at it’s dramatic effects, but eh, it is what it is. It’s still effective overall.
I've wanted to see it...how does it stack up to Halloween, Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street?
shareI know you didn't ask me, but if you didn't mind, I'd like to chime in.
Personally, I think Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street are clearly better. Also, I won't lie, I liked Friday the 13th more.
It should be said that I'm a big fan of shashers, though, especially 80's, so it might make sense I'd like those films more than this one.
That said, Hellraiser is often considered a classic for a reason. Great special effects, a pretty dark story, and pretty memorable sequences.
I'd advise giving it a shot, but just keep in mind it tends to be more innovative and unique than other films from the same time, so it's possibly you won't entirely care for it (I don't know what else you like, so it's hard to say).
Hope that this finds you well.
Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street are better, but Hellraiser is worth seeing, believe me. Like Jigsaw said, just be ready for a wild ride. Part 2 is pretty good too. I’ve never seen any after that.
shareAs you can imagine, the sequels were rather mixed.
Hell on Earth was entertaining, but didn't really have the same vibe at all. Bloodline had a sort of more epic intention, but I don't think it worked at all. Inferno was something else entirely, more a gritty horror-crime, but it has nostalgic value for me. Hellseeker is more of a mess than anything, while Dead is probably more enjoyable overall. I have a soft spot for Hellworld, and Revelations is utterly God-awful.
I've not seen Judgment, but I've heard that it's definitely better than Revelations, though I imagine that the bar has never been set lower.
Some scenes in Judgment were just plain disgusting, but it wasn't that bad of an entry into the series.
shareWait until you see part 2 LOL....it will fuck you up(in a good way)! Dramatic effects as in that corny yellow lightning effects at the end? It does look dated but apparently they ran out of money when they did those.....they were supposed to be much better lol.
