I'm English...what was the piont of this story?

Seen this movie twice now in the space of twenty years. What on earth was it all about?Didn't find the 'humour' once funny.(even though I love Mr williams in so many of his films). What was so shocking about his DJ style? Why was it shocking he was playing the hit tunes of the day?The story was a non event in my book,I just can't stop wondering 'so what dude...big deal'
It just seemed to me the typical way an American film making a whole big deal over some true life character that didn't change a dam thing in history.Won't be watching this crass movie again while im breathing old chum.

My response, I'm American, what's the point of The English Patient? Lighten it up there chum. Fictionalized stories using real people are made every day and sometimes the humor is very much related the country of origin for the film.

I've never seen this film--never intend to--it just reeks of 'no story.' I'm glad someone watched it for me and confirmed. Back when it came out in 87, I could tell from the trailers that this film was about absolutely nothing. I'm here only 'cause AFI has it on their list. Christ, levinson is blowing someone.

-This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

You have to remember the time the story takes place in. He was supposedly limited to what he could do on the radio. The film wasn't also about just him doing funny radio bits, but how he changes. At the end of the film, he is a better, deeper, wiser person than at the beginning. At first, he wisecracks all the time but then he becomes more serious, especially after the terrorist attack he survives. He realizes it isn't all fun and games and his humor becomes more humanitarian.

a deeper, wiser person? that sounds like a dr. phil show.

If you check around, America (Hollywood and indy) has produced more great films than all other countries combined.

Sorry they can't all be about the staff in an English mansion or whatever.

OK, it's six years since Moss-37 posted his query, Robin Williams has passed on, and Good Morning, Vietnam is being re-shown in tribute.

Take the story back to WWII and Glenn Miller, playing the sort of music the troops wanted. So in this version of Airman Cronauer's story, the DJ is playing (against the superior's wishes) rock and roll. Now let's move to the main point of the film - the futility of war and the fact that servicemen enter the theatre of conflict, be it a war or "Police Action" and make friends with the locals.

GM,V is the story of one man's realisation that war is hell, and you can't trust anyone. Don't look at the USA's involvement, just look at the hell of war, even for those behind the lines.
