Dennis Hopper's Thoughts on TCM 2

Though Hopper might be, for the most part, easier to tolerate these days, he still doesn't hesitate to let you know when he's unhappy about something. Such was the case with "Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2," the first of Hopper's last seven films to be released, and his least favorite of the lot. He's much more enthusiastic about his role in the upcoming "Blue Velvet."

"God, I hate to mention them both in the same breath," Hopper admits. ''Blue Velvet's a wonderful film and 'Chainsaw' is a joke. It just seems unfair to talk about them together." He feels "Chainsaw's" makers misused him as a Bible-quoting, buzzsaw-brandishing Texas Ranger. Hopper claims he signed onto the Austin-based production so he could golf at his friend Willie Nelson's nearby country club, and because it gave him the chance to sing ''Bringing in the Sheaves."

"That was pretty interesting. I can't even carry a tune," Hopper laughs.

"Blue Velvet," a suspense thriller in which he portrays one of the most demented psychopaths ever to hit the screen, was a much more rewarding experience. "David Lynch (the director, who also made "Dune," "Elephant Man" and the midnight movie "Eraserhead") is a very intelligent guy. He wrote the screenplay, had great insight into the characters, and spent a lot of time developing them with us. None of these things happened on 'Chainsaw."'

it sure is a dog of a night

I wonder if his view softened as the years passed, given the cult following the film eventually found.

I sure hope it did. To me, he's one of the (main) reasons I think the film is such a freakin' fun ride.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

He was right. This movie is trash and I can't believe it was made by the original Director.

I read somewhere he called it his least favorite role. I wonder if he said that before or after playing King Koopa in Super Mario Brothers.

reply

Wouldn't blame him, an absolute garbage. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. A B-movie.

I love Blue Velvet and all, but I don't even feel like it was one of Hopper's best roles. Honestly the character of Lefty is a lot more inspired than Frank.

Frank is you're typical evil character, whom curses way too much. I feel like the deepest thing about his character was that he expresses his love through anger and abuse. There are a lot more things about Blue Velvet that are a lot more interesting.

Lefty is a great parody of a John Wayne, Bible-quotin, Texas lawman type whom will stop at nothing to serve justice. I love how easily he gives up on saving Stretch's life in the film. Or how he's too focused on cutting the place down, too even noticed that he could of saved Stretch, yet again.

Hell I'd even say his character in River's Edge is more interesting than Frank in Blue Velvet.

You know he's been dead for nearly 8 years right?

Uh, that quote was from the 1986 article.

Sucks he didn't like it but I thought it was great

He made way worse films than TCM2.

I always enjoyed Dennis Hopper interacting with Christopher Walken in TRUE ROMANCE calling Walken's character an "Egg Plant" in the Sicilian Scene and received a 3rd eye for his comment.. LOL!! I wonder how many times they shot this scene just because they couldn't stop laughing probably??
