Is Dr. McCoy a bit of a hypocrite here?

He stands idly as Scotty blatantly changes history by sharing a key futuristic technology in return for a few sheets of plexiglass. McCoy even laughs at Scotty’s ridiculous rationalization. Bare in mind that this is the same Dr. Leonard McCoy who had earlier traveled to 1930, saved the wrong person’s life, and made Hitler win.

The writers...along with the funny rationalization...should have put in a line about a self-destructive virus that would wipe out the transparent aluminum info, for over thinking geeks like us.

That is a good idea.

"How do we know he didn't invent the thing?"
Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. And the time travel to save the whales and Earth was no doubt a fixed event in time.
