this is a comedy.

I love star trek and I have to say that this is not a star trek film this is a spoof of star trek. wrath of khan is one of my favorite sci-fi films and the voyage home is one of my favorite comedies. how can you take this movie seriously?

Well, it was actually meant to be a comedy of sorts. Nimoy was put in as director, and being the good nature person that he is, focused on the characters and their interaction than any pertinent story point.

To be blunt, deep themes aren't his forte. So he focused on what he knew; the characters. And he focused on them to the exclusion of everything else, which I thought was a huge mistake, making the film enjoyable as a film, but not a good sci-fi or Star Trek film.

Perhaps it can be taken seriously because real life is seldom a straight line of either good or bad. Instead, good and bad cycle through our lives as well as serious and humorous moments. To Kirk's crew, no doubt this entire mission was serious, but even Kirk et al would have to realize a humorous moment when it shows itself.
