What a great question! It's tough to answer. When I first saw the film I was about 32 and though I had seen Julian Sands already in the (very strange!) sci-fi/comedy, "Vibes", and thought him quite handsome, I was very taken with Freddy. The character of George was kind of mopey and weird, whereas Freddy was upbeat and hilarious, not to mention cute! I liked his good relationship with Lucy and his standing up to Cecil.
As a couple people have written, why not have them both? I'd draw the line at a physical thing with Mr Beebe, though he was a great guy. He was like the same character he played in "Four Weddings and a Funeral".
It's hilarious that nobody mentioned Daniel Day Lewis as a viable choice! He's like a wooden statue, even in films like "Last of the Mohicans" or "The Age of Innocence". Ugh. He should make a good Abraham Lincoln, though.
As for Rupert Graves, I recently saw the remake of "The Forsyte Saga", with him as Young Jolyon (one of my fave characters) and he did it justice, though was far more prone to anger and hysterics than Jolyon in the novel. But he has aged well!
If you want to see a luscious Julian Sands in a period film, check him out as the famous composer and ladies' man, Franz Liszt in "Impromptu". He and Hugh Grant (who plays Frederic Chopin) have some great scenes together. Sadly, I think the last thing I've seen Sands in was the show "Law & Order"!
She deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die.
