We All Know Women Do Not Make Wise Decisions.

Of this being a typical John Hughes film, everything has to wrap up nicely.
Duckie meets and beautiful girl who likes him, at the last minute (lol). Rich guy selects poor girl and live happily ever after (lol).

But lets take a look into reality. Women are conditioned to marry up. Rich guys know this, which is why those guys are always jerks. But women would except their bad behavior over a Duckie-type guys bad behavior, because they are blinded by the lifestyle. Duckie is always the better choice, but women think they can have it all (The rich guy husband, the guy best friend, etc.). But love only works with sacrifice and risk, not obvious financial security. Choose Duckie, He would eventually mature, and now you have a guy who understands you.

But you all wont. You would chose problematic guy with the money. It will be good at first. And then it will turn into a life full of backstabbing, worries, cheating and maybe even abuse.

In the original version Andi chose Duckie at the but due to the test audience's reaction it was changed to her choosing Blaine - the movies plot makes more sense with her choosing to be with Duckie. Another Hughes film 'Some kind of wonderful' is a sort of gender-flipped version of 'Pretty in pink', the main Character chooses the best friend character over the popular rich girl.

We All Know Women Do Not Make Wise Decisions.

So women as a whole do not make wise decisions because they have all be conditioned to marry up???? This is a very prejudicial and ignorant statement. You really shouldn't begin sentences with "all" when you are referring to a group of people divided by sex or race. First all women don't anything. Women are different depending on the specific woman. There are women who are like this and there are women who aren't.

Also I would argue that Andie didn't choose Duckie based on his monetary status, she simply wasn't attracted to him. Andie was really mature for her age. Even in high school, she was focused on college and career minded. Duckie was at a complete different place than her. He didn't take school seriously and I would also add that when Andie mentions her hopes or aspirations he really doesn't take much interest in them. He likes a fantasy Andie without really taking into account who she is and what she wants for her life.

Meh. Just because you are offended doesn't mean it isn't true. The fact that I've hit nerve proves that point.

So women as a whole do not make wise decisions because they have all be conditioned to marry up?

You combined two of my statements and made them into one, like an idiot. LMAO!

Women do not make wise decisions. (Who cares how you feel about it).
Women have been conditioned to marry up since the beginning of time? (Again...who cares how you feel about it).

Mostly all men already know this. Your anger is not going to change that.
Deal with it. LMAO!

reply

Wow you are an idiot:) Clearly you must care deeply to craft what has to be the most idiotic response possible:). But then you are a guy who started a topic in the Pretty in Pink thread so I suppose I should have known that. Lol

I didn't read what you wrote. Just placed you on the ignore list. I figure it was something stupid since you lost your trolling attempt. LMAO! Deal with it.

You didn't read it but replied-likely story lol

YES! Why can't people face the truth for a change instead of denying what makes them uncomfortable—particularly when it's true about themselves? Women truly don't make wise decisions, and all men are arrogant and presumptuous simpletons who like to make broad, erroneous generalizations based on their limited experience.

Deal with it.

I agree. If Duckie wasn't so excentric, clingy and not interested in school maybe it would have been better for her to stay with the best friend. But no! Duckie just wasn't up to her level: she liked studying, she took life seriously, she worked hard and this guy was just playing all the time. She deserved better than Duckie.

reply

Well, I'm only one woman, but I wasn't conditioned to marry up. I was conditioned to be able to support myself and to marry a man who treated me well.

FWIW, I was rooting for Duckie - until I saw the movie again and remembered what a clingy, needy guy he was. To a woman, that's a big turn-off, regardless of what the guy's socioeconomic class is. But I didn't see her relationship with Blane going the distance either.

Anyway, this is all a moot point, because we all know that at the end of the day, guys run after the "hot" bitchy girls who treat everyone like crap, like Bennie ;-) Blane and Steff would never be into Andie IRL...unless there was a bet involved, a la "She's All That."

Hmm I totally disagree. You are mixing up guys and girls. Sure guys go for looks (and so do girls TBH) but guys don't feel any special draw if a girl treats people like crap whereas plenty of girls seem drawn like moths to a flame to the guys who treat other guys like crap, 'bad boys'. All things equal, even if it's not for something serious, on average guys prefer nice and sweet. It's girls, who often enough, especially if it's not for something serious, who seem to strongly get drawn to the jerks who treat other guys like trash. Heck, I think I just saw a study where they said that for a short fling, girl's were preferentially drawn to the least altruistic guys in their test. OTOH, guy were not preferentially drawn to the less altruistic girls for either a fling or a long term.

Guys might go with Bennie, for a bit, but it would be in spite of how she acts, not because of it. And given a choice between a Bennie like that or one with a better personality, I'd bet by far and away most would go for the latter.

Andie is hardly homely looking or anything and she has a lot of that cute factor and a certain kinda magnetism about her, a real cuteness about her. I have no trouble at all believing a guy like Blane would go after her (and it's literally with out a doubt with how she was in most of the scenes past the very start). It seemed plenty natural to me. I'd bet you most guys would rather date her than Bennie.

reply

This is generalizing women and generalizing rich people. Andie is smart and strong-willed, and if at any point she decided Blane wasn't the person for her, I have no doubt she would dump him. Blane is rich and gives into peer pressure, but he tries to redeem himself in the end and doesn't display any behavior that would make me think one day he is going to cheat on or abuse Andie. He is generally kind to people, seems to try and see the best in people, and that's why he notices Andie. She was not attracted to Duckie, end of story. And honestly from the way she kind of treats him as an annoyance the whole movie and then doesn't seek him out after he disappears thanks to his jealousy over her date, I don't think his "understanding" of her and honestly, his obsession with her, are all that vital to her. She loves him as a friend, but she is very independent and would ultimately be fine with neither guy in her life if she chose to move on from both of them.

I never understood why she was cast in films opposite male romantic leads she had little chemistry with, but alongside other actors & actresses she worked very well with like Anthony-Michael Hall.

The most egregious example was PRETTY IN PINK. There she had negative chemistry with her romantic interest Andrew McCarthy and seemed barely to notice her deuteragonist Jon Cryer playing in the same scenes with her, but lit up next to antagonist James Spader with whom she only shared a handful of short scenes. Even in retrospect it is easy to believe their characters despised one another and fixated on their class/status/physical differences via a strange disturbing attraction, and yet Hughes chose to ignore this...for PROM! Aside from the marvellous Annie Potts, PIP was really just 80 minutes of wasted opportunities.

But men, on the other hand, always make wise decisions, right?

I know you're long gone, this posted on IMDb, but really, male or female, the reality is humans make foolish decisions at times. It has nothing to do with whether one is female or male. Heterosexual men often make foolish decisions because they're blindsided by a woman's physical appearance, regardless of their problems.
