Why is this film so hated by critics?

i dont think this film really received the credit it deserves. it is i guess a 'bad' film, but i think this is intentional.. its quite obviously based on the swashbucklers from the time of technicolour and before. i think its an homage to these, the over the top acting, bad accents and classic score.
anybody agree?

Might have something to do with the Director trying to rape a 16 year old actress who starred in the movie.

Critics and media uproar kinda killed it.

That allegation did not surface until 2009/10 when Polanski was re-arrested for the 1977 statutory rape of Samantha Geimer. Pirates actress Charlotte Lewis made these new allegations 24 years after the film was made in an attempt to capitalize on Polanski's re-arrest. An obvious attempt at extortion, and who better to represent you then that oh-so-credible shill of an attorney, Gloria Allred. In the end the allegations were dropped...fizzled away.

Nothing is fizzled away anywhere.

He admitted he raped and forcefully sodomized 13 year old girls and then dodged jail&paying them retribution by leaving the country. No matter what everybody thinks about his talent will never make that go away.

Childrapist are childrapist.

P.S. Charlotte Lewis told in interviews that "they where lovers" not long after the movie itself. There is nothing wrong in changing stance about something that was looking good at age 16 but makes you wonder 20 years later.Nothing.

There is alot wrong with raping kids though.Alot.

Its got a bad rep because its not a good film, never hits it stride and died at the box office.

Its that man again!!

Who knows....I enjoyed it.

I just saw it yesterday. Aside from trying to transform Matthau into a 17th century English rogue, there isn't much else to write home about as far as characters and story go. I didn't think it was terrible, but I can understand why it's fallen into obscurity.
