I am a Nicholas Cage fan, but he is TERRIBLE in this

What the hell is with that stupid voice he puts on? And aside from that, his acting is just generally horrible in this movie. He obviously got better, but he must look back on this and cringe.

He plays an awkward teenager WAY too awkwardly....I agree. Remember the way he was eating the Rice Krispies bar when he went to Peggy Sue's house to pick her up for the dance?????? He was so awkward.

I think he's actually acting in this movie, unlike most of his stuff now

reply

I COMPLETELY agree. I cannot stand Cage and feel he is one of the worst actors ever to make it big. BUT in this movie I actually love him. He is acting instead of readings lines in a monotone voice. Especially the scene where they break up and when he is in the greenhouse and says "WHO is Janet?" in that high-pitched voice and tone of genuine and utter confusion. I thought he was great in this. His performance was certainly polarizing though, based on what I have seen on this board

It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?

reply

He was horrible, just like in most of his movies.

But he was horrible a different way: he tried to act here and failed miserably. While in most of his newer movies he didn't even try anymore.

reply

Agree!
The first of many films he screwed up.

reply

I thought he was pretty ordinary in this too, but it kind of was his stepping stone to the big time. He went from this to Raising Arizona and Moonstruck, where he really made names for himself.🐭

reply

He was supposed to be a bit of a twat.

The voice was stupid, at first I thought it was meant to be his voice breaking, but at 17/18, he was too old for that.

Yeah.

He sounds like he has a cold and needs to blow his nose. Why he chose that voice and why the director let him 🤔 We may never know

reply

Agreed. He's the most confusing actor - he has it in him to produce great performances (Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, Bringing Out the Dead) but also to be cringingly bad. When he pops up in a film you never know which Nic you're going to get. Very odd.

I’ll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

reply

I agree. He ruined the movie for me because I couldn't see a thing that would've made Peggy Sue attracted to him.
