I simply adore animals. But movie is a movie. If someone shows cruelty to animals, it is the same as if he beats his wife, if he helps blind person cross the street, if he throws old bottles in a brook, if he admits he made a mistake though nobody noticed, or (if a female) smokes though pregnant etc. It all builds a character, shows us what a certain person is like. If some action, some behavior seems disturbing or offensive, it enables us to create our attitude, our image of the character.
If you make a movie about a nazi, won't you show murders, gas chambers, deportations just because they would disturb someone? They are supposed to! How would you understand who he was, what were the circumstances and explanation for his behaving? Some people wouldn't kill and torture if war didn't happen. But some of them would kick animals instead. Some of them do. And if you wan't to show a character, you must show the little things he does, both pleasant and offensive. Otherwise movies would be empty and pointless.
