It also helped Daniel that he was friends with Miyagi who was an old love/ex-fiancee of Kumiko´s Aunt. Plus Daniel was different from the guys that she was used to. Partly because he was an American but even more than that. Plus she didn´t like Chozen and Daniel always stood up to him.
