I've been to Japan multiple times and have never seen an unkempt hairdo (outside of Harajuku).
I love the tea ceremony where she takes off the hair tie her hair is beautiful.

This movie is from the 80's plus her hair was really long. Look at some of Elaine's hairstyles in the older episodes of Seinfield. Some of her hairstyles were similar to Kumiko's.

shareI've never been to Japan, so I don't know how people normally wear their hair over there (lots of rhyming...), but they definitely took the 'casual' look too far with Kumiko's hair. Looks like they did her hair, then rubbed her head and sent her onto the set...
