It was definitely meant to be a goofy kids movie. The original was a bit goofy and family friendly as well.
One rule of thumb that almost always holds true is;
- If the main protagonist is a child, the intended audience is/includes children.
That's not always the case but more often than not it's true. Children associate themselves with the protagonist since they're of the same age. This film was definitely made with them in mind. One only needs to see Tobe Hoopers other directorial efforts to see this was definitely a restrained 'lightweight' effort.
Turned into a GWAR video in the end. Those were some really fun creature effects. That weird tone continued through the whole film. It was neat. I'd always heard of this movie but this just wasn't part of my childhood.
