After coming off the mammoth success of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in 1984, Wes Craven, who was offered a job to direct A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE, passed on that to head to Warner Bros, hoping to branch out from the horror genre by signing on to direct a science-fiction thriller called FRIEND, which was to be the vein of John Carpenter’s STARMAN.

The end result was a film that was nothing at all like the gentle tale Craven had hoped to make. The Studio LOVED what he did with Elm Street so much that they slowly but surely pushed him into turning FRIEND into a more Elm Street like effort.
