This film is pretty much a Gremlins knock-off.

This movie was written before Gremlins in 1981 and Paramount wanted to do the movie but then New Line bought it in 1985, it was New Line's decision to make the film more Gremlins like yet the script has elements of the EC sci-fi horror comics of the 50s and 50s b-movies

Maybe, but I still liked it a lot more than I did Gremlins.

This thread does bring up an important question--does the first Ninja Turtles take place in 1986 when Critters would be in a theater? We can't assume it had earned an encore run in the 90s can we?

Maybe it was one of those independent cinemas that only show cult movies.
