Why the ridiculous hairdoo on Cruise?

Was that supposed to be an homage to something?
To me it just looked rather ridiculous.

It did look ridiculous, but I think his character was supposed to be more than just a wee bit "off". A pompadour hair cut would fit the odd persona.

If your a competitive guy, and you lose a game of pool to a obnoxious dick with a haircut like that... you want to beat him so bad that you up the stakes.

Same goes with the "Vince" t-shirt.

They tried to make him look Italian with the pompadour. Certainly a novelty look for Cruise in the movies.
