Scorsese's choices in music in all of his films is amazing, I especially love his choices in The Color of Money. For me it is hard to pick between Scorsese and Tarantino when it comes to who is better at coming up with amazing soundtracks. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?
shareScorsese i rank number one with soundtracks. His the master and color of money i rank has his best for music. Every track was legend great use of songs for every scene .. like who owns this place and dont tell me nothing etc and when paul newman stages a comback from retirement that music is the best .always gets to me

Both of them use music as a crutch and their movies would not be half as popular without music. Scorsese even rips off Tarantino (the Departed steals an obscure song from Kill Bill, the human Beinz "nobody but me," and uses it in exactly the same way for a frenetic fight scene with DiCaprio beating up Providence gangsters in a deli. I do credit Tarantino with introducing me to a few favorite songs, but his movies are overrated as are Scorsese's. They're mostly empty and stupid trash. All atmosphere and fake cool with no substance. And they usually leave out many songs on the soundtracks, too. At least Scorsese got the human Beinz song released on the departed soundtrack - Tarantino left it out or he was not able to get clearance for the soundtrack cd.
shareYou might have a weak judgment when it comes to judge directors. It took Scorsese 26 years to win an Oscar after his first nomination. He wasn't even nominated for Taxi Driven. Tarantino doesn't even have a directing oscar. I don't see it as being overrated, they are underrated in a way because of this. Innaritu, THAT is an overrated director. The fact that he already has the number of oscars that Tarantino and Scorsese have combined is a real insult if you ask me.

100% agree. I love Scorsese soundtracks, except for Color Of Money. I recently started a topic about that on this movie, about how the score really kind of ruined the overall feel of the movie for me. I keep saying Tangerine Dream would've been perfect! Especially being 1986, coming off the success of scores like "Thief" and "Firestarter". Ugh, great cinematography, awful music to go with it.

I think Scorsese and Tarantino and lynch all use music as a crutch to create atmosphere. Where is this music coming from and why is it there? At least in The Color of Money, everything is set in bars and ball rooms so the music is appropriate (for good or bad) except for a few score songs that have no reason for being there. I am not a fan of just having movie music for the sake of setting a mood or winning academy awards. It should come from the scene like someone playing the radio or some band playing it music in a club. Anything else is a crutch and also biased to big budget films because a small film can't afford to license a lot of songs usually. I am tired of all the music licensing issues too. So many movies and tv shows are held up due to legal BS. Twin Peaks had great music, but that just masks the show's mediocrity and stupidity.l because the music just wasn't connected to the action or suitable usually. I like Julee Cruise, but she wouldn't be playing in a biker bar most likely. The harder music was more fitting.

shareScorsese uses music as a crutch. It's telling that the original Hustler had hardly any music. It holds up far better and has aged less than TCoM, although I find them both overrated (I would rate them both 6/10 at most). The Hustler is depressing and overlong. And Color is too corny, hokey, flakey, silly and phoney.
In both movies the female characters are shallow and weak. Why does Carmen want to go around with Vince and sit in bars drinking and smoking while holding his coat and money, watching him play video games and kick ass in pool against losers? He doesn't even know how to hustle until Eddie comes along. He shows off and runs the table for like six games in a row and he wonders why nobody wants to play him. Kind of an idiot with a dumb girlfriend. The Hustler woman was depressed and depressing. She was suicidal and at least plausible but not what most women want to see. Bert was not even a psychopath, he was pure evil and a pathetic loser creep who thought he could take the money from Eddie after dumping him. He deserves to have his fingers and arms broken.
LOL! I just fast forward through the opening titles. Horrible music.
