Why do people NOT love this movie?
I mean, what's not to love? It's idiosyncratic, quirky, beautifully filmed, original, boldly acted, with a story of profound, almost fairy-tale like audacity of good vs. evil.

shareThey do love it
shareIs that a serious question? Clearly this isn't a movie for everyone. It's violent, degrading, foul-mouthed, obscene, and just plain odd. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's not exactly a movie I'd watch with my grandmother.

Everyone says the corniness is supposed to be satirical, but I don't buy it. Satirizing triteness by being trite isn't good writing. And it doesn't prove anything other than the not so mind-blowing notion that suburban America is shallow and the people live in their own world.
Besides, I think Lynch was being absolutely sincere with that scene, which makes it all the more cringe inducing.

I didn't find Blue Velvet cringy in the slightest.

Lynch may think it is mind-blowing to suburban America. And for those who already know it's not mind-blowing, it can be entertaining for the other half to find out, or ponder it. Suburban Americans don't think, or don't wish to think, these things happen among them.
"Besides, I think Lynch was being absolutely sincere with that scene, which makes it all the more cringe inducing."
I can't believe I'm reading this here.

This is a great movie if you ask me. I love neo noirs.

You're being overly analytical on this movie.
Maybe Lynch's movies are just not for you.

Those things are good (except "quirky") but it's a bit full of itself and too obsessed with being cryptic rather than actually having anything to say. It seems to think it's impacting but it's really rather hysterical.
What?! People absolutely LOVE this movie. Not all people, as not all people will ever agree to any one thing, as opinion (especially opinion about art) is based upon personal life experiences, social status (which informs how much we will understand the plight of the common man from either a rural or urban perspective), education, and exposure to a wide array of cinema.
This film, similar to much of Hitchcock's work, relies heavily on your desire to be a voyeur; your dark curiosity. Frank's world is a sinister underbelly of anarchy and violence, where only he reigns supreme. We so desperately do not want to be a part of it for fear of falling victim to his wrath; but, so desire to know what happens in it. Like Twin Peaks: fire Walk with Me, you have to take the drugs and go for a ride with bad men to truly find out how far the rabbit hole of evil goes.
On a side note, while I appreciate much of Lynch's work, I don't actually enjoy the majority of it (including the latter half of Twin Peaks). His work is certainly an adventure, but often you end up in a weird, half dream world that meanders towards mystical (at best) conclusions to otherwise thought provoking stories. Blue Velvet is one of his few truly great works, with a conclusion that I can identify with and is grounded in reality.
"your desire to be a voyeur"..I like this expression.
I'm curious though, what conclusion did you identify with Blue Velvet? for me I liked the atmosphere and the music, but the plot and the ending were both trivial.
I love this film, it is easily one of my top five favorite films. Aside from having an obvious impact on my username, it also hit all of the perfect notes for me. I love the atmosphere and mix of bizarre qualities with some of the more straightforward elements. I also find it very exciting and moving. And of course Frank Booth is a legendary character who really brings the film to life during his few scenes onscreen.

Well, I just saw Blue Velvet for the first time ever and well, I am completely mixed on it. I thought half of the film was fantastic while the other half was pretty terrible (surreal just to be surreal) as well as pointless scenes. Dennis Hopper's performance and character were absolutely fantastic and for me, the best aspect of the film. The film was also very dark in tone which I appreciate. However, I didn't care for the symbolism in the film, I felt it was out of place and I know a lot of people love that aspect but I didn't care for it, reminds me of a horror film I recently watched called Wolfen. The performances were all fine in the film but Hopper was a stand out.
I was only somewhat familiar with Lynch's work, I seen Rabbits in my high school theater class as well as clips of Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead (My old theatre teacher was a huge fan) but I think I can safely say Lynch is not my type of director, he is a good director, don't get me wrong but I feel like in his films he tends to be surrealistic just to be surrealistic. I like weird films as well, one of my favorite directors is David Cronenberg, he makes bizarre films but they always fit perfectly with the story like Videodrome which I thought was a great film. You mentioned the fairy tale aspect, I guess I didn't care for that either, it's a split down the middle for me, I thought it was alright. I see a great film (for me personally) in it but it squanders it with out of place symbolism and out of nowhere scenes, also a way too happy of an ending for such a dark film.
Overall, certainly not a bad film at all, I guess it's just not my type of film despite it's great plot and antagonist.
