I haven't seen all of Bluth's films yet--planning on seeing his last one, Titan A.E. pretty soon-- but I just find it hard to believe that there's anything better than this film. It's very nearly a flawless film, and I can't think of very many reasons how it could have been improved. Maybe I would have preferred it if the movie had ended right after Fievel's father tells him, "now you are a mouse"... that would have been the perfect way to end the film. Still, the ending where they're flying on Christopher Plummer's Henri bird is nice, too.
Some people say The Secrets of Nimh is Bluth's masterpiece. I vote this. What do you think?
"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."
YES I WOULD. While ANASTASIA is his most successful film to date (in terms of money), I think this is his most artistic film. I know NIMH gets a lot of recognition, and I like that movie too, but *this* movie is a masterpiece.
That textbook is like 1000 years old! It still refers to dementors as ringwraiths!
No, I don't think AAT even comes close to that. It ain't a bad film, but it's a bit messy and uneven (too many characters and a somewhat loose storyline). The thing about Bluth was that he never really had any true masterpieces on par with the Pixar films, The Lion King, or other such films that could be considered legendary.
Now, that said, if you're asking which of his films was the best film, The Land Before Time by far was his best (it also had George Lucas and Steven Spielberg really helping Bluth out). LBT is still considered to be a younger-audience cult classic to this very day.
I believe it is. The one thing that always kept NIMH from being tops for me is the Jeremy character...he always felt so out of place and added unneeded bad comedy to an otherwise great film. In AAT, Dom DeLuise's character Tiger is much more fitting and represents more than a comic relief character. An American Tail has the most interesting story, DB's best animation, and the right balance of heart, laughs, and metaphor. It's a shame it's become so underrated these days. I see a lot of people bringing up The Land before Time, that might be great for kids but it's mass appeal is nonexistent. And to the person who called The Lion King a true masterpiece, thanks for the joke, hilarious!
"If you're not an alien, time traveler, or esper, your opinion doesn't matter. "
This is really is a great movie, and captures in a way that very few animated movies have mostly because of its characters. But I wouldn't call this a masterpiece and its a shame because it could've been a masterpiece. However this is not the fault of Bluth or Spielburg, the blame for that really falls onto the studio. Mostly because they went and cut down on the production time, demanding the finished product much earlier and forcing a massive speed up in production. So if the movie looks very cut and paste and jumbled as some have mentioned this is the reason why, many story points got lost and shorter scenes had to be made to compensate. This is mentioned by Bluth himself in his interview where he talks about the films production, he does give some details on lost scenes.
Thanks to a friend cleaning out her attic I was able to get a copy of the novelization and as result got to see more of what the original script had in mind. Fievel gets screwed the most as his entire character arc (which is slightly similar to Little Foots) was pretty much cut out where as in the novelization you see the character actually evolves as he turns less impulsive. The character's temperament is also shown more and his angry outburst on Orphan Alley is a bit more built up to. Tony is a more fleshed out character and his friendship with Fievel is more grounded. Some events happen over the course of days such as the sweat shop and building of The Mouse of Minsk (which Fievel actually does participate in building the outside barrier with Tony). There's more time with the Mousekwitz and papa grieving the loss of Fievel. There's also the Mousekitwitz reaction to learning Fievel is alive, papa gets humorous moment and Tanya gets a crowning moment of awesome, she's also the one who has Fievel's hat in the original reunion scene.
Nobody here is right or wrong but my choice would definitely be The Land Before Time. I like both NIMH and this one but there's some flaws in them that I don't feel are in Land, this one being some of the singing and the unfocused story
