Oscar worthy performance

I think that Sigourney Weaver should have won the Oscar for Best Actress. Her role as Ellen Ripley was one of the most memorable roles for an actress in the 1980s. It was very rare for a woman to be placed in the lead of a sci fi action movie. So iconic is Weaver as Ripley that every subsequent female character in sci fi movie is now described as Ripleyesque. See Carrie Ann Moss in The Matrix . It is a shame that Weaver lost to Marlee Matlin in Children of a Lesser God.

Well, it's hard to compete with a real, live deaf lady, but when is the last time you saw Marlee Matlin in anything? The last one I can think of is "What the Bleep Do We Know?" Weaver has had a long, impressive career with or without an Oscar.

reply

And nobody remembers Children of a Lesser God anymore, unlike Aliens.

reply

Not really the kind of movie/performance that wins Oscars.

I have to sadly agree. Historical dramas like Lincoln or Ghandi are surefire Oscar bait. Science fiction is often looked down on as a genre when it comes to performance.

Yeah. And sometimes even with tech awards they give it to the wrong movie. Like Star Trek First Contact was only nominated for one Oscar in Best Make Up and lost to the Nutty Professor. Though in some ways I do understand why they chose Nutty Professor. Eddie Murphy who is a really good looking guy looking like so many unattractive people was a big deal at the time. But the make up effects in Star Trek First Contact were better.

She did get nominated, which is quite an achievement considering the kind of movie it was. Pretty rare.
