I keep seeing people say it should have been Alien then into Alien 3 and skipping this one. Aliens is a classic. My favorite Alien movie, favorite extraterrestrial movie, favorite action movie, and next to Terminator 2, favorite science fiction movie. Alien was good but this just took everything to whole new level. And Alien 3 sucked! What is wrong with you people???
Aliens is simply the least scary of the major 4 alien films. The worker/ drone aliens, whatever you want to call them, have nowhere near the same scale or sense of psychopathy as the alien in the first film. In Aliens, the aliens can barely be seen because it's all cloaked in a Robocop means Laser Quest kind of 80s lighting, sometimes blue, sometimes red. Most of the aliens are rendered as little more than giant bugs, scuttling along pipes, dragging people to their doom or spitting acid on them but rarely killing with the same sense of prolonged dread and horror as Alien. Aliens is largely like a film about motherhood (surrogate motherhood or actual in the case of the queen) and armies, whether they're human or alien. In real life, Newt's predicament would be horrifying but, at least after watching it the first time and knowing she's alright, it arguably comes across as a template for 30 years of videogames more than anything. Vasquez might save the film- she's great, as is Ripley's relationship with Newt. It's an ambitious film but clearly less of a gothic horror, apart from the queen, than the other films.
Your opinion (picnic10) is well thought out and reasonable, but is important to note that this film clearly was not going for a gothic horror vibe. It does exhibit strong influences from gothic horror, but sets out to elaborate on the Ripley's struggle in the Alien universe by presenting a scenario wherein the Aliens are up against a human threat instead of human space truckers, and clearly shows that the Aliens are still to be feared. It's a tense action film with influences from other genres. Whether or not you prefer it more is up to you, but it does not detract from the film which is just as close to perfect as the first Alien. I can understand people who wish this film was more in line tone wise with the first, but many of those folks don't seem to understand that Aliens is not any worse just because it didn't give them another gothic horror film.
I actually prefer gothic horror films to action films by a wide margin, but I still think Aliens is on par with the original regardless. Both did what they set out to do extremely well, and both had to overcome the stigma of working in genres that do not get much acclaim.
I like it less these days, but to be fair, I thought the direction Cameron took was a stroke of genius. At the time this was seen as one of those sequels that was better than the original by many. Because he took a different direction we didn't just get a rehash of the first movie.
If those pen pushers up at city hall don't like it,well, they swivel on this middle digit!
Aliens does not hold up well over time. It has very poor scripting and it's more like an action-y, video game-y add-on to the original film. Compare: The Thing (1982), which is a classic for the Ages. (*The latter isn't a sequel (albeit a remake), so--admittedly--it's probably not a fair comparison... and its 2011 sequel / prequel was far, far worse than Aliens relative to its original).
'3' was pretty dumb also (IIRC). Prometheus was more a comedy than survival-horror, and the trailers for the next film look like straight-to-torrent material.
So... all in all, it seems (on merit) that the the first film was really the only good Alien film.
nickm2, saying something's videogamey doesn't mean the film's based on a videogame. It means it partly feels like watching a videogame. Which is mostly in retrospect as it was released before many such videogames.
When people complained about Aliens: Colonial Marines being to much like "Halo, Dead Space, Call Of Duty, Mass Effect & Outlast" well Aliens from 1986 PREDATES those copycats clones!!!
Yeah Aliens the original can't be for what it is!! Enjoy the game that started it all.
You gotta stay in your seats until the Sulaco reaches the terminal!
