Joan + Bernie slept together???

When Debbie (Demi Moore) returns from here first "date" with Danny (Rob Lowe) her roommate Joan (Elizabeth Perkins) says she has a huge guy in her bed. I think it is Bernie (Jim Belushi). At the first meeting of the all four of them at Mother's (Debbie & Dan's first real date) Joan has a disgusted look on her face when she is introduced to Bernie. I think it was Bernie who was in her bed the night before and she is so disgusted that he does not remember her she takes off. This was never really mentioned again in the movie other than Joan & Bernie's hatred of one another.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

reply

i disagree, i very much doubt it was bernie.
although when danny and debbie broke up and bernie and joan have a drink at mothers she kind of gives him this cheesy smile. that was quite interesting.
then when he sees her at baseball she gives him cold shoulder again.

reply

But didn't they show him leaving and was it not James Belushi? When I first saw this movie, I was sure it was him and I thought it was kind of funny considering how typical it was for his character in this movie.

reply

Ahh, interesting take. If Joan wasn't such a bitter feminazi with hatred for all men due to her own insecurity and feelings of inadequacy particularly compared to Debbie, I would put more stock in this theory, because it would make sense why she had immediate disdain for Bernie. However since she is such a biaatch to Danny as well (well, pretty much every man in the movie as well), I think it may just be a Joan thing. But hey, it's possible? I wonder if there's any reference in the script to this being Bernie?

reply

I have a copy of the script and there is no mention of that being Bernie. I don't think it was Bernie as the "really big, really drunk guy," but I've always thought they did hook up after they met up in Mothers after last call, which is why he approaches Joan at the softball field in such a friendly way and also why she gives him the cold shoulder.

reply

absolutely.
they did it.
watch it again for the clues.

That's what I've always thought too.

reply

Yeah, I think so too, maybe then, but not earlier. There's also the scene earlier, or maybe it's this scene, it's been so long since I've seen this movie when he's left out as his buddy is hot and heavy into their new romance, and he's sitting in the bar, drinking alone, wasted, and Joan shows up, and he says to her "Good to see ya" or something, and then under his breath like, "I've been waiting to see you all night."

So I think he kinda had a thing for her, underneath all the fighting back and forth.

reply

I thought it was possible, too. If you watch that scene at Mother's carefully, it starts fading after Bernie says "yeah, yeah, yeah, so you wanna dance or what?" You see them talking and Joan smiles right before it dissolves to the next scene. At the very least, I figured they buried the hatchet. But who knows, there could have been more

I think that "really big guy" in Joan's bed was Bernie. Turn up the volume at the end of the scene--you hear the guy in the bedroom stumble and let out a grunt, and it sounds like Jim Belushi.

reply

The reason she is mad at him when he meets her at the bar is because as soon as her and Debbie get there he comes on to Debbie assuming that's who he's to be fixed up with and completely ignores Joan ("Has anyone ever told you you're a very attractive woman? HUH!?!). Joan is clearly annoyed and feeling dismissed so decides to leave.

Besides, the night before Joan leaves Mother's early to go to another bar whereby Bernie most likely stayed at Mother's since that was his home-base.

Too much evidence in the opposite direction for him to have been the BIG guy in her bed. Besides, Belushi wasn't THAT big. I pictured it to be more of a 250lb. 6'3 guy.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if he did nail her towards the end after her smiling at him in the bar....then not wanting to talk to him at the softball game shortly after.

reply

I don't think Bernie was going to the bar that night to be fixed up with anyone. I think Dannny wanted him there in case Debbie didn't show up.

reply

its possible they hooked up after the Mother's last call scene when they toast to Dan and Debbie's breakup , that scene leaves you in doubt but at the very end in Grant Park Joan is still disgusted by Bernie's advances so its highly unlikely that anything happened.

reply

Just to add to the consipiracy...

After the scene with Joan and Debbie discussing the "really big guy", there is a cut to a Danny/Bernie scene where Bernie discusses being with a girl with a bid that was sending "static electricity right to my nuts".

I'm thinking that was Joan. All of the confrontations between the two afterwards build from that one night stand.

Years ago, I was at the press junket for this terrific film. And I recall someone mentioning that there was an "aftermath" scene of a tyrist between Joan and Bernie, but it was cut from the film. Hopefully we'll get a special edition dvd one of these days. Performance highlights for everyone involved!

Yes, they are made for each other. They both think the opposite gender is good for one thing, and would probably still be single 22 years later.

reply

Would love to see that. Hope they restore it. They shouldn't have ever cut it.

ABSOLUTELY!!! I have been proposing that theory to anyone who has seen the movie. Some of the clues:

When the "big guy" in the bedroom falls off the bed, he let's out a grunt that sounds like Belushi.

As soon as they go from the "morning after" scene in Joan and Debbie's apartment and Joan finsishes telling Debbie about the really big, really cute guy, they immediately shoot to Litko talking about a fur-lined bed, etc.

When Joan and Litko see each other at the bar the next night she has this look of disgust like "oh my god, you don't even remember me..."

That's about all of the evidence I need. After all, this isn't a court of law.

Very well put webs75. I concur.

I saw this movie about twenty times(expert!) and there's just no way Bernie and Joan were attracted to eachother. If Bernie was the last guy on earth then Joanie still would not be hooked up with him. The only thing is, that when they toast after mother's last call is probably that, next to that it's ment for Danny and Debbie, it's somewhat getting tiring(for Joan I suppose) to be annoyed by Bernie, I think they just tried to make the best out of it. They are just making an effort to get along after all this time.

reply

Good points precious - maybe more likely they hooked up THEN toward the end.

I have wondered since I saw this movie AT the theater in the 80s. I thought they DID fool around at first but recently (I've seen this TOO many times) I think maybe not - they are both dissatisfied with their own lives - they just simply don't want their more attractive friends to find what they can't - shallow, but thats how it read to me - yrs later. That LOOK on Joan's face when they all met the next night at Mother's - she looked at Bernie as though she felt offended that THAT is who she is paired with.

What do you think?

reply

The things you stated are EXACTLY how I think about it, wendykroy! the look on Joan's face as she is meeting Bernie is "oh right, and I'm hooked to this guy tonight, THANKS, BUT NO THANKS"! And Bernie has the same thoughts about her.
lol, i've seen this movie too many times as well!

reply

This might sound strange, but there's a chance that it is Jim Belushi in her bed, but that he isn't Bernie. My point being that they needed someone to be in the bed, but didn't want to pay another actor for the part, so in troops Jim, throws a sheet over himself, grunts twice and he's out of there. It's a trick that would work once in the theater, but but doesn't hold up in these video "rewind it and watch it twenty times" days.

Just my .02

reply

That could be true, but I think that roaring sound that the guy is making, doesn't really sound like Bernie. But it might have been him, to lower the finances.

reply

I will watch the movie again. U might just have a point there.

Wow! Its been 20 yrs and we're still wondering about this. Precious - can't believe we talked a year ago already - time flies. I still don't know - do you? I go back and forth but after seeing this thread and what a mystery it is it makes me learn more towards that they did. For a movie that wasn't a big hit at the time of its release it sure is enjoying popularity - even if only to figure out what these two did!!

Seriously - are you guys more interested in knowing if these two went for it or if Danny and Debbie lived happily ever after?? ;-)

Seems like all the characters didn't mind being a bit easy so more likely Joan and Bernie did do it and it just wasn't too important - other than to portray a difference b/t what these characters were saying and doing ...

reply

I think it was someone else.

reply

I have always thought they hooked up, pushed along with copious amounts of alcohol and then regretted it. Fits perfectly into the title "About Last Night" doesn't it? I think they did and Joan won't mention it because she is normally repulsed by the big lug. But who knows.....

reply

It's been almost 2 years again I no, i still don't know, lol!
But I'm beginning to think that they at least kissed at Mothers last call...
but later Joan realises that she definitely doesn't want to be with a guy like Bernie, because he will never change.

reply

I don't think Bernie was in her bed, in the beginning. I DO believe they hooked up later. Maybe it was a kind of opposites attract or odd shameless flirting. At the end, Joan may be a little embarrassed, irritated that he MIGHT treat her as a conquest and/or well, we know that he's not going to change. At least not right away.
