Name Change

I never understood the switch from "Valerie" to "The Hogan Family."

Yes, I know about Valerie Harper quitting/being fired from the show but "The Hogan Family" didn't seem quite write with Sandy Duncan clearly being the star.

More appropriate options:

"Sandy"

"Goodbye Valerie!!! Hello Sandy!!!"

or, my personal favorite,

"Valerie STARRING MISS SANDY DUNCAN"

reply

It was briefly re-named "Valerie's Family." I wish they would have called it "Valerie's Dead."

reply

Not sure if it's true but at the time I heard Valerie Harper had threatened to sue over the use of her name when she was no longer involved.

reply

Sandy Duncan was never the "star".

Burn!

it shows how little clout harper had that the show was able to survive several name changes without her.---and with multiple name changes.

Other stars leave shows (Charlie's Angels, Three's Company, Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed) they just replaced cast. this also replaced the name of the show.

Well for me, Valerie was simply never as funny as Rhoda. I'm not implying that Valerie Harper was a one-note actress with limited range. I just never saw her as a warm and loving mom character. She played neurotic much funnier.

reply

Agreed, I've seen both and it was funnier without her. Actually it would be funnier without the twins (who don't look like anybody in that family lol). Just have Bateman and Taylor as a widowed father raising his son trying to make it in the world. I thought the show stayed on bc of those two inspite of everything harper pulled.
