This show's writing was painfully stupid, even for the time. They show this lately on MeTV, and it's a tremendous waste of a time slot. Bad enough they so-called jokes are idiotic, they actually have a laugh track.
Satire and spoof are fine, but this show manages to pull off neither, because every gag is ridiculously over the top to the point of being totally unfunny.
The show is regarded as a classic and the writing is regularly cited as inspired. How many episodes did you even watch? The brilliant send-up of "Witness" or the infamous season finale? What about "State of Sledge" that satirized Iran-Contra, which is something no other sitcom was doing. The DVDs don't have that early laugh track and the versions airing on MeTV look lousy.
Obviously, humor is subjective and everyone has a right to their opinion, but yours wasn't a particularly insightful post about a bygone show and it did seem a little obtuse. I also couldn't see the point of it aside from the fact that haters seem to post negativity about everything from Beethoven to "Chariots of Fire." Guess I'm still cross we have a president that calls Meryl Streep "overrated."
Commentary like this on a classic, much revered show underscores why shutting down these message boards is happening. So much worthless criticism here that's akin to just insensible trolling.
Adding the laugh track would have made it look stupid like a lot of sitcom shows today. I am almost at the end of the second and final season with no laugh track, and have loved the show.
There is also a making of documentary and they showed a clip with the laugh track added and it did seem like a whole different and "stupid" show. I prefer to pickup on my own where it should be funny by understanding what the writer is trying to do.
I'd say that, for me, probably about 50% of each episode is so-so, 25% is quite funny and another 25% contains gems which make you glad you stuck around for, usually one or two really strong gags per episode. The talking to his gun thing got very tiring for me quickly but after almost two seasons I now find a chuckle when he does it because it's played so straight.
Unlike you, this show rocks. The show runners never thought they'd be picked up for a second season, so the first season ends with Sledge blowing up the fucking world! "Trust me. I know what I'm doing." Cut to shot of entire planet exploding. Then it's like, "Oh, fuck. We got picked up for a second season! What the fuck do we do?" Did they decide that the first season was a dream, like the season after "Bobby's dead," like Dallas? No!! The second season, after Sledge destroyed Earth, was a freaking prequel! That is genius, and you are a fucktard.
Because people are ‘way too sensitive on this site, I am going to risk stating the obvious and make it clear that my post is intended for the OidiotP.
"The second season, after Sledge destroyed Earth, was a freaking prequel! That is genius"
It wasn't "genius," since it was a major continuity error. Hammer first met Doreau and was first partnered with her in the first episode of season 1, yet she's his partner in the second season, 5 years before they even met.
It was just a tongue-in-cheek handwave, which was fine considering the farcical nature of the show (something like that wouldn't have worked for a "serious" show like Dallas).
From what I understand, the show producer didn't think it would get picked up for a second season & went all out with the S01 finale, only to find out at the last minute it had been renewed. At which point he probably said.....
The show was one of the best ones on TV and criminally underrated. Besides being funny, the creators were the only people who dared call Clint Eastwood out on his bullshit.
I'M ASSUMING YOU ARE NOW DEAD AS YOU SOUND SHITTY AND PROBABLY DESERVED IT...THIS WAS A WONDERFULLY SILLY SHOW...MY LATE GRANDFATHER LOVE IT AND I HAVE MEMORIES OF WATCHING IT WITH HIM AND US LAUGHING TOGETHER...I REVISITED THE SHOW RECENTLY AND WHILE IT ISNT AS FUNNY TO ADULT ME...ITS STILL VERY GOOD.
