I was more into this than the movies as a kid.

I'm not even sure I knew there was a movie until the sequel hype. Anyone else?

Like you I preferred the cartoons over the movies when I was a little kid, I always looked forward to watching The Real Ghostbusters on ABC at 4pm every weekday.

It was a dig at a rival animated series, from Fillmation, that was just called "Ghostbusters". Filmation actually made a short-lived live action Saturday morning series called "The Ghost Busters" in the 70s, it was unrelated to the film, but because the producers of the film wanted to use the name (they tried "Ghostbreakers", but they knew it just wouldn't have the same ring), Columbia paid off Head of Filmation Lou Scheimer for the title. After the film was a hit, Scheimer was contacted about making a cartoon based on the movie, but his parent company thought it would be easier and financially more beneficial to do a cartoon based on the 70s series as they wouldn't have to share profits or pay Columbia to make the series. The cartoon was just called "Ghostbusters". Columbia was obviously none too happy about this, and hired rival up and coming animation studio DIC to make a cartoon based on the film, which was called "The Real Ghostbusters" to let audiences and buyers know that this was the show based on the Ghostbusters that people cared about. Both show debuted within days of each other in September 1986.

In the long run though the Filmation show didn't last long, the DIC show lasted many years longer both in first-run and in reruns, and the show and merchandise was saddled with this rather confusing title that didn't make much sense to kids like me that didn't know about the other series until years later, and even when we did find out didn't necessarily make the connection.

No problem, you're welcome :)

If you're curious, here is an episode of the "other" Ghostbusters:

I remember tuning into one of these on Cartoon Network (I think) in the 90s after my mom told me "Ghostbusters was coming on" (thanks mom!), and switching it off pretty much immediately, partly because it wasn't my Ghostbusters, and partly because I could tell it was exactly the kind of cartoon I found corny, bland and boring. But I'm sure some people liked it.
