Jerrica had nothing to lose with her secret identity

I mean, she wasn't some superhero on whom the fate of the world mattered, she was just a celebrity. What was she gaining by being both her manager and singer at the same time?

And what would it have mattered if her identity had been revealed? It looks like the only reason she was being Jerrica and Jem was for the sake of her lover Rio. Which is unfair, because he was caught between the two and she made it happen.

Does anyone understand this situation at all, and can they explain it to me?

Like Hannah Montana and her counterpart, Miley, to keep her..hmm....identity so she can go to school without anyone knowing just by taking the wig off. Haha.

I always laughed at that. Her father was publicly known to be Hannah Montana's father and did not hide his identity (except for that fake mustache he wore when doing promotions). Yet no one could figure out that his daughter Miley was Hannah.

I think it was a business decision. If I remember correctly it had something to do with the music company and the ownership. Being Jem allowed her to distance herself from that.

She suppose to have looked totally different than Jerica but they looked the same to me. I guess people would have wondered why they looked so different if they were the same person even though a lot of people thought they were the same person. It's a very confusing situation

reply

Right? I tried applying Hannah Montana logic but Jerrica is living a rockstar life as well. She's Jem's manager and runs their record label. She's not low profile as Jerrice; in several episodes people recognize her as famous in her own right.

The purpose of the secret identity was that as Jerrica she would never have been taken seriously as a music talent, any effort of hers would have immediately been dismissed as a vanity project by a record producer instead of a work of art by an actual 'artist'. And Jerrica needed her music to sell. Remember, at that point in time her record company was on the edge of bankruptcy. She could not afford to sign another music group. If she was going to get the company out of the hole she needed a hit. And the only material she had to work with was herself and her friends.

After Jem hit it big, it was too late to pull out. Imagine the negative PR if the public found out that they had been duped all this time? Again, it would have meant the end of her company. So Jerrica was trapped being Jem.

And let's not even go into the mental issues of Jerrica 'splitting' her personality traits between 'Jerrica' and 'Jem'. She's so far down rabbit hole that she sees herself as a rival for her own boyfriend's affections!

In my 'head canon', I like to think that once her company got successful and no longer lived or died on Jem's next hit album, Jerrica quietly put Jem out to pasture.

I could imagine some MTV "Where Are They Now" show asking the question, "Whatever happened to Jem of the Holograms?". She would have faded from the public scene just as quickly as she appeared, 'Eddie and the Crusiers' style.

I love that you wrote back! I feel like we'd be awesome jem friends. The Eddie... analogy is awesome and makes me really really really want a series of true to the original intent movies where the final one is basically that story but Jem. Which then is so popular they make another movie called "Return of Jem"

It was a conflict of interest thing. If Jerrica revealed she was Jem at the start, Eric Raymond could have claimed she was cheating, or find a loophole to get Jeerrica kicked out of the Battle of the Bands contest, which would have meant losing the company and the mansion.

Rio would have kept the secret. He adored Jerrica. He would have done anything to protect her and the girls.

"Eric Raymond could have claimed she was cheating"

Well, she was...

"any effort of hers would have immediately been dismissed as a vanity project by a record producer"

That's what it was, though.

There are some amazing answers to this post below.

On top of all that, and one of the posters alluded to this - even IF there were no legal problems that could affect the 'business' of Starlight Music itself, there was a mailing list called TRULY OUTRAGEOUS (of which Christy Marx, Britta Phillips and Samantha Newark were also members) where some fans discussed the possibility that Jerrica may have had stage fright, and totally lacked the confidence and the ability to go on stage and perform , except as a DIFFERENT PERSON ALTOGETHER. This makes perfect sense to me because there is absolutely no evidence that Jerrica ever sang/performed in the past - unlike Kimber, who made her musical talents known from a very young age. Even Rio and Eric Raymond seem to be under the impression that Jerrica has no singing skills of her own, suggesting that only her FAMILY was aware of her capabilities.

It's like an author who wishes to use a pseudonym, rather than be identified with a particular book themselves. Even famous authors and writers often use pen names when they write books that are somewhat at odds with their personal image.

Now apart from what I went into above, I have ANOTHER, unsavoury, theory - ON TOP OF THE FIRST ONE - as to why Jerrica chooses to have a dual identity. She refers to her true self as "plain". We can see that she clearly enjoys the attention she gets from GUYS as Jem - whether or not she chooses to get involved with them (although sometimes she does, as with Riot). We never encounter any men hitting on her as JERRICA - except for the time Riot tried to use 'Jerrica' to get to 'Jem' - but when she's Jem, the list of male admirers she has goes on and on......I daresay there is a bit of a Madonna/Whore complex going on with Jerrica.

As Jerrica, she can be the "plain", simple, steady businesswoman who is faithful and devoted to her "boyfriend" Rio. The paragon of virtue in the eyes of the public - who also takes care of all the foster children. As Jem, however, she can not only be glamorous and sexy, but "truly outrageous", to the point where she can explore her femininity and sexuality in ways she would never DARE as Jerrica......especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Even aside from Rio and Riot, she has kissed at least 2 other guys as Jem - Nick Mann from the 'Starbright' episodes, and the British actor from 'Beauty and the Rock Promoter', while performing with them onscreen and onstage.....but her own "image" of herself as Jerrica would not have allowed her to do this.

Other male admirers of Jem include Svenson the ski instructor in 'Last Resorts', the 'Indy 500' race car driver, Fritz from 'Culture Clash', the magician in 'Music is Magic', the British aristocrat from 'Britrock', and so on. Even if she chooses to rebuff the advances of some of these guys, as JEM, she doesn't have the same moral obligations that Jerrica has - she is sort of above reproach, since anything goes in the world of show business - and she can explore all her options with different guys in a way that Jerrica can't bring herself to. (And once again, most of these guys - if not all of them - would not be interested in 'Jerrica'! They wouldn't be interested in 'Jem' either, if they KNEW that Jem was fake).

It's a very complex psychological dynamic, and one that is frankly beyond the scope of a cartoon, but basically, as you can see, there are PLENTY OF COMPLICATED REASONS as to why Jerrica was determined to keep the Jem identity entirely separate.

The reason in the show that they gave during 'The Talent Search' 2 parter was that Synergy would be dangerous if the wrong people got ahold of the technology. Terrorists, assassins, the government, etc. would all use Synergy for evil, so she had to be kept a secret.

Because Synergy had to be revealed as well once Jem was revealed as Jerrica???

reply

It made no sense whatsoever, she was just being a bitch. And everyone could see who the other Holograms were, so it wasn't so difficult to figure out who Jem really was.
