Willie singing Elton John NOT on DVD or streaming?

One of the best moments of ALF, the ending of season 1 episode 8 was Willie singing Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting but it's not on DVD or streaming. WTF??? Luckily it's on Youtube.

they didn't want to pay for the song to Elton, so they cut it.

The original Lion's Gate DVD release was the syndicated (rebroadcast) version of the show, where they trim scenes to make time for more adverti$ing. For the nearly 20 years since they were released I've been steaming over this. I'm happy to report, however, that Shout Factory has just released the full, intact, original broadcast version, along with the post-series movie Project: ALF, the animated series, ALF Tales, a retrospective with creators Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett, as well as audio commentary on select episodes. THIS is what should have been released all those years ago instead of that half-assed Lion's Gate version. While I'm not happy to have been bamboozled into buying this twice, I am very happy to finally have the full versions on DVD after all these years (I had copies on VHS but those are a pain in the ass). Better late than never.

The German 2009 dvd release featured all scenes except for the Chipmunks song in thr season 1 episode when Alf meets Jodie, the blind gal. It also features a slightly cut version of the season 2 episode Gilligan's Island. Does the new US release have the same issues?

reply

The US release of ALF from Shout! Factory was released on DVD in October 2023 and has all the original broadcast episodes of ALF uncut and unedited. All scenes and music are intact. Please note the episode "Try To Remember" has been edited for content and represents the best existing version of the episode. Originally they have ALF get an electric shock using an electric mixer, but instead they have ALF hit his head. Parents back then complained about ALF getting an electric shock so they ended up changing it to ALF hitting his head. It's definitely the best US version and I recommend it.

Wow! Didn't know about them changing that episode based on viewers' complaints like that. Very interesting! I'll have to go back to my VHS copies at some point to see if I have that electric shock version!!

Sorry for the late reply, but I just checked and, yes, it does include the Chipmunks songs. I'd need to know specifically what they cut from the Gilligan's Island episode to check on that one.
