How did I miss this movie back in the day?

I was a teenager when this came out, yet I have no memory of it at all. The only place I have ever seen it mentioned was in this hard back Industrial Light & Magic book I have had for years, where it spoke of the CGI stained glass night (with a neat picture) and mentioned some of the matte work. A year or so ago, I got to thinking about the stained glass night being an early example of CGI in film, and it got me to looking into this film. I found it and finally watched it last night. It has names attached such as Spielberg, Kennedy, and Marshall, all of whom have been attached to big blockbuster films. I just find it odd that this one fell under the radar and seems to be pretty much forgotten today. Was this heavily marketed back in 1985, or what?

I remember absolutely nothing about it coming or going. I used to read Starlog Magazine and I can't imagine that there were no articles about it. Maybe I just wasn't interested and dismissed it, but even then, I would like to think that I would at least remember it being out there at the time. I don't even remember an advertisement for it. It's just odd to me. Does anyone have any information about how this film was handled or how quick it's run in theaters was?

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Same thing happened with me. I was about 11 when this came out and i thought I knew most of the 80s fantasy/adventure films but I had no recollection of this at all. Good film, too, glad I stumbled on it.

It's really odd that the film pretty much fell under the radar like it did. I really completely missed it back in the day. I am glad I am not the only one, though. But it is sad, though, as the film deserved more success than it was awarded. If not for that small section about the film in my Industrial Light & Magic book, I may well have never discovered this gem!

It came out at Christmastime in 1985, just like Sherlock Holmes did in 2009. I remember it being out. Maybe it just got lost in the holiday shuffle? It wasn't a big blockbuster but it made money.

It's just weird that I can't remember this at all. As much as I kept up with movies, this one just fell beneath the radar for me. I wonder how I would have liked it had I seen it back then, as a teenager!

this movie fell in-between the target market cracks.

Think about how two other Spielberg movies attract their audiences. "Goonies" was almost purely a fun kids adventure movie. Indiana Jones was all about action and adventure. "Young Sherlock Holmes" was some action and had a fun kid like sense of adventure to it. But in being a bit of everything it missed a wide audience.

the movie had some scary scenes and involved a somewhat complicated plot for young kids.

the title has "Young" in it and it has a light and fun kid like sense of adventure to it. so i don't think adults would go see this movie without bringing a kid (even though it is a quite enjoyable movie for adults).

it is a bit of a period piece in that it takes place during Victorian age England. I'm not sure Sherlock Holmes brings to mind action and adventure compared to Indiana Jones. So teenagers and thrill seeking adults probably didn't see "Young Sherlock Holmes"

I was 11 or 12 when this movie came out. So I was the perfect age, old enough to enjoy the adventure and darker themes but not too old to expect more drama or bigger and bolder action.
