Bloody nose

I couldn't watch all those bloody nose scenes. One scene, I could take, but not scene after scene of blood dripping out of Louden's enormous nostrils. 

Why did nose bleed all the time? Did he have leukemia?

In the book it was explained as repeated injuries while wrestling. The film implied it was due to his weight loss.

It seemed totally unnecessary after a while (what did it add to the movie??) + I can't imagine people were allowed to go around BLEEDING all over each other in f'ing 1985 with AIDS in the headlines.
