Gah I hate the music in this film

Otherwise it's a great (though admittedly still flawed) cop thriller that is 80s in all the best ways. But the music, dear God, it just doesn't fit. At all.

The film's second half is way better because the score is used less. Imagine The French Connection, and paste ridiculous 80s music over it, and that's how I feel about this one.

EDIT: I wish the blu-ray offered an option to watch the film without any music.

it obviously wouldn't fit in the french connection because the music is specifically made for the 80's you know because it's an 80's movie!!! if you put a score in more of less any 70's film's from the 80's 9 times out of 10 it won't fit, In my opinion anyway the music was great, it fitted perfectly in the film.

The music is one of the best things about this (great) movie.

Just my $0.02.

Man, I love it.

It's great man, fits in perfectly, esp. if you were around when the movie came out in '85. The music dates the film to that point in time. BTW, Wang Chung were quite big at the time.

I love the music. The opening credits scene is actually one of my all-time favorite openings to a movie.

the movie, acting, car chase, action, women, scenary and MUSIC were all great...and why would we imagine 80s music in the French Connection..it was not made/set in the 80s.

Wang Chung tonight!!

People are so used to synthesized music today, and not that it was totally new in the 80's, but it was less common than recently. Synthesized music is merely a term used to also describe what, compared to using "real" instruments, is synthetic music (albeit the voices are human and not really all that modified and filtered in today's world of Pro Tools and the like).

The main theme and metaphor of the film is counterfeiting. The choice to use music like Wang Chung's, that made much use of synthesizers, was an intentional choice in that regard. I doubt Wang Chung was one of Friedken's favorite groups, but it fit with the film.
