Lowe's earring in the gay ear

Back in the 80's the right ear was the gay ear for earings.

reply

Oh

reply

Yeah. It seems silly now, but that's how it was then.

I'm just expressing my opinion.

You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

I noticed that as well. Of course, he was the most "alternative" character in the film. You must have read Ann Landers' column setting the record straight (so to speak) on the matter.

reply

I think he was just trying to be George Michael (before George was out).

reply

If his watch was on the right wrist, it would only confirm the gay earring.

reply

Wearing a watch on the right wrist means that you're left handed. That's all.

reply

Now it does, in the 80's it was not.

reply

This is the first I've heard of that.

reply

It was common in our area. Right ear earring and watch on the right wrist was code for hookups.

People were silly back then.

reply

don't forget about the handkerchief in the back pocket

reply

Michael wore it in his right ear first because that was "in" in England. When he came over to USA he was told that it meant you were gay. So he got both ears pierced.

reply

And when you wore it low on the lobe, like Lowe, it meant you were catching not pitching.

In the early 80's it was also common knowledge that if you wore green on Thursdays it meant you were donut puncher.

reply

Damn--you know ALL the rules! Get it, son!

reply

This was a thing, yes.

OTOH there was a type of straight man who defied convention & wore an earring in that ear. The point was to signal his status as a guy who "got enough" that he didn't have to worry about it. Like Harry Styles in a dress.
