Does anyone know of any plans to remaster Spies Like Us, and release a special edition widescren version? It is one of my favorite comedies of all time, and the second DVD i ever bought. The DVD that is out now is full scrren, single layered, 2.0 sound. So, when is a good version coming? ........anxiously waiting.
According to the recent Warner Home Video chat with HTF a collection of Chevy Chase movies is on the horizon, letterboxed and remastered. Not sure what movies will be included but Spies Like Us and Funny Farm were mentioned.
Nothing was said about extras but the rep from Warner said that the ACE VENTURA collection is an example of the kind of thing they have planned for the Chevy Chase collection.
I, too, love this film and have been quoting it often for the past 20 years. My fear that a widescreen version will not be released was recently confirmed. It appears that Warner Brothers has started packaging some of their non-widescreen early DVDs from 1997 into 2-packs. I saw a new two-pack today of Spies Like Us paired up with Nothing but Trouble (an awful film), both of them the old standard versions. WB went to the trouble to make a new keepcase for the set, but didn't bother to letterbox the films, so I would say it's likely that they ever will. THAT SUCKS!! I feel the same way about some of their other early non-widescreen DVD releases, such as Grumpy Old Men, Frantic, and Fearless. Shame on WB!!
I fear that you are right, but hmm WB has re-released far far less successful movies. With some "older" comedies though they really don't seem to go out of their way to produce an acceptable DVD. I have this DVD since it was released like 10 years ago.. Back then a few other companies were also in the bad habit of releasing movies in 4:3. On the spot I can think of 'George of the Jungle'. It was released in 4:3 on DVD while the LaserDisc Version was 16:9. That movie is also still only available in 4:3, so it's not only WB who sometimes don't re-release movies that are previously only available in 4:3.
Well.. Does anyone think, that a letter-writing campaign would do any good? There would be also the question of how many people would be interested in doing that..
I did the same for Gattaca. I refused to buy it unless it was in Widescreen. (which it finally came out in Widescreen, and now have it) I checked out Gattaca on DVD from Netflix, but, I refused to buy it.
The reason why I prefer widescreen to full screen is that in widescreen it's the "full picture", the movie was originally made in that ratio, and it just seems better.
I waited a long time for Gattaca to come out on Widescreen, it finally did. Still waiting for "A Midnight Clear" to come out, it's supposed to ... when, don't know? I dislike pan & scan. I mean, if it was originally made in full screen, then, nothing one can do about that but if it was originally made in widescreen, then it should come out on DVD that way.
I would love to see a Special Edition to one of John Landis` Best movies. I would love to see it for the first time in Widescreen and an digitally remastered sound. It would be cool, if it got an new featurettes interviews with the cast & crew. I know John Landis doesn`t record commentaries for his movies (Expect for Ketuckey Fried Movie). But it would be cool if Dan Akroyrd and Chevy Chase recorded an commentary track for the movie.
just flicked thru the movie channels and noticed spies like us on TCM and what do ya know its in widescreen...
why the hell is the DVD in 4:3 (which i own), warner should just borrow turner classic movies copy if they cant be bothered to remaster the f'ing thing.
