Seriously, whats up? I watched this movie and absolutely hated it... I wanted to turn it off halfway thru but I unfortunately chose to see it all. THIS IS A DISGRACE TO WESTERNS, that, and a disgrace ti just movies in general. I dont care if it had an allstar cast, whats the point if the acting was still horrible, the characters (the villains especially) are dumb and pointless, and the movie is just crap crap crap. How is this getting a 7.0?! It's a flat out horrible movie! And what bugs me evern more is the title recommended is Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West" which is a tremendous movie and one of the best westerns ever. "Silverado" belongs nowhere near it!! Its one of the worst films I have ever seen.
You're clearly an authority, another "everyone is out of step but me" person, so there's no sense in debating with an idiot. This movie was made long after the western was dead, and was a great comeback effort for the genre, IMO. People piss and whine about the stupidest stuff, but the fact is, when it comes right down to it, the movie was entertaining, and that's what it's all about, except for anal-retentive self-appointed critics that couldn't find their ass with both hands if someone held a flahlight on it for them.
Perhaps a lot of the people who don't like this movie don't fully appreciate that it is supposed to be as much of a comedy as it is a western and that a lot of the things in the movie, like when Mal shoots the gun out of one of the bad guy's hand, are both parodies of traditional westerns as well as homages to them. It's a light hearted movie that doesn't take itself too seriously but still manages to deliver some stunning visuals and a cast full of memorable characters. So that's why I gave it a 10.
I also rate this moive a 10. I don't see it as trying to make a statement or display artistic skills. To me it's a hommage to the westerns of old. It manages to fit so many cliche's in with a nod a wink (and a chuckle) while still being a loads of fun and a coherent (if a little silly) story.
I actually think that 7 is the perfect rating for this film. It's enjoyable, but not really great. I appreciate the attempt to bring back the traditional, pre-Leone/Peckinpah Westerns, but it doesn't really come off particularly well. I myself didn't get into it until about the halfway point (barring the great opening scene). The idea that it's in the league of "Unforgiven", "The Wild Bunch", "Ride The High Country", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", and, of course, "Once Upon A Time In The West" is a joke. The movie isn't really funny, but it does have its moments of fun. It just isn't a great movie, IMO.
"It is recognized that you have a funny sense of fun." - Claude Rains, "Lawrence of Arabia"
silverado is not in the top league of western movies im afraid. just look at what ford did (yes especially with john wayne!) and leone is an artistic mastermind, when it comes to building tension (yes the ten minute fly scene in once upon a time in the west!) characters r being introduced and get shot the moment u get to know them, now that just knocks u off ur feet! now back to silverado as i said its not in the same league as those classics, however its an enjoyable movie for its time (a time in which the western genre was literally dead) it's a modern western which has its moments. it does try to use certain elements of the classic movies which sometimes even works - most times it doesnt however. imho a 6 certainly no 10 though for a very good western (many deserving a 10 here) watch: once upon a time in the west, for a fistful of dollars, the good the bad and the ugly, stagecoach, she wore a yellow ribbon, red river, fort apache, rio bravo and a few others which names dont come to me right now, u have superb drama and acting in all of them, by great directors.
If you dislike movies that have not an ounce of pretensiousness in them, you will hate 'Silverado'. Personally, I loved it. It is a throwback, in a way; it has more in common with 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' than with movies like 'Unforgiven', 'The Searchers', and 'Tombstone'. If you're just looking to have a good time with a western, 'Silverado' will give that to you. If you're looking for a deep story, FORGET IT. Just a good time here, folks, nothing more. And check out Kevin Costner! I didn't know he could do goofy...

Plus, it would be pointless to try to compare this movie with the likes of anything Clint Eastwood or John Wayne did. Please...
But the fact is that this was just a flat-out fun western, period. And, for what it's worth, I thought the ensemble cast all worked perfectly...kind of same way "The Full Monty" worked. Not great movies mind you, but if you've got solid chemistry between the actors, it makes for an enjoyable flick.
Too true, along with the fun factor, something else that is sorely missing in most movies today - clever dialouge.
Tell me, whatever happened to all those legions of Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino clones that were packing screenwriting and film-making classes in the mid-90's? Where have all those cowboys gone?
why waste yout time to give all of us who like this film your lame ass opinion. I think you are a disgrace to movies in general, and you are dumb and you post is horrible, and you are crap crap crap.
I like "Silverado". Occassionaly the dialogue doesn't seem logical however. Why was where the wagon train was parked "a bad place to be sitting with women and kids" for example ? There had not been any indians seen in the film so they weren't likely to be attacked by indians . The criminals had their money so they wouldn't be back so what was it ? All I can think of was that there didn't seem to be any water around .
I have a hard time putting my finger on exactly why I don't like Silverado, but something about it just annoys me. Probably because it had potential, but was wasted. There are some nice sets, props and the overall look is nice, but you never feel an ounce of tension. I realize it doesn't need to try to be High Plains Drifter, but for god's sake there are never ANY doubts that all the good guys will live and all the bad guys will die. Killing off one of the main characters would have gone a long way to giving this film some weight, but Kasdan was crafting an Up With People Western, not anything with any grit.
Kasdan's Big Western Chill just didn't do it for me. I could buy Glenn, Glover & Dennehy as cowboys, but Kline & Goldblum just look ridiculously out of place, and Costner is flat-out annoying. He would have been the perfect character to DIE & at least create a LITTLE tension and suspense. I also grew extremely weary of the countless, knowing smiles between the good guys. Kline gazes lovingly at Scott Glenn, then smiles lovingly at Danny Glover, then smiles lovingly at Costner, then even smiles lovingly at Brian Dennehy. Geez, get a room already.
Come to think of it, Kasdan's characters in Big Chill shared lots of knowing glances, too. I kept waiting for the saloon piano player in Silverado to light into 'You Can't Always Get What You Want.' (But if you try sometime, you can get some smug cowboys to smile at each other -- a lot.) At least Kline gazes lovingly at the womenfolk, too. But then he goes and picks the ugly midget woman (who lived a year dangerously as a man) over Rosanna Arquette. Yuck. Talk about impaired judgment. What's with all the smiling? Did he gnaw on some peyote out there in the desert or what? Smoke some loco weed? Did he lick a toad?
I was disappointed when I first saw this in the theater and each time I've seen it since. I guess it's good enough that I've given it a few more chances since 1985, but unfortunately it's never gotten better for me. I'll give Kasdan some credit for attempting to revive the Western, which were dead at the time.
Pale Rider wasn't much better; an endless series of worn-out cliches. IMO the Western wasn't really revived until Unforgiven, a film so superior to these two mid-80s clunkers, it's not even close. It's like comparing an entree at Emeril's to two Happy Meals.
Ha! Funny comments about Kline's shows of affection for his fellow mens!
Seriously, you sound just like my friend Mark, who is a BIG fan of Peckinpah and the classic westerns of the late 60s-early 70s. He really didn't like Silverado either, but he can't put his finger on why. He also tried to watch it numerous times over the years, and if one asks him if he liked it, he ultimately ends up saying "I've tried to watch it so many times I don't know how I feel about it."
