Much too lighthearted, way too clean for my taste for a western. And all that swashbuckling music was so overbearing.

Understand, but it still holds up for me 30 yrs later. The soundtrack is actually not bad as it's reminiscent of The Big Country and to some extent the Magnificent Seven. Not as good as those by any means, but reminiscent.
shareMan, I have no idea what you're talking about. People get stabbed and gut shot left and right. There wasn't nearly this much violence in just about every Western I've seen, especially ones from the 50s. The kill count would make a Friday the 13th film envious. Maybe you saw an edited copy.

The story was cliche and half-assed in my book. It's as if a team of writers worked on it, like so many TV movies.
I can sort of see why others like it, but I like so many other movies, including westerns, better than this.

Watching this back to back with The Empire Strikes Back (also Kasdan), you can see the little cuts (like a solo horse running from the action) that made me always call this the Star Wars of Westerns. Well, maybe you didn't see them, since you didn't wait for them.
It touched virtually every trope in the genre, and had plenty of chuckles to go along with the climaxes. My entire circle of friends loved it in the theater, and my wife and I enjoy it just as much every time I pull out our bluray.
All the guys in it were big stars in the day, and there were some interesting casting choices. We didn't expect to see John Cleese or Jeff Goldblum in a western, and both turned in nice performances ... Cleese completely against type.
