Francis and his father chewing on the trick gum. i dont get it

Why was Francis's father screaming?

There were two different kinds of trick gum. The one that Francis chewed turned his mouth black and the one that Mr. Buxton chewed was very hot/spicy.

I don't know how I missed that. I thought he was just overreacting(overacting) to the black stuff coming out of Francis's mouth.

No, I thought it was him screaming over Francis chewing the trick gum and not realizing it.

The fruit gum was the spicy one.

Trick gum used to be a thing. Sometimes it would be a really strong clove gum that smelled like mint but tasted really strong once you chewed it. There was also trick gum that had mouse trap mechanism that would snap your thumb. You also had ones that were randomized like one would turn your mouth black, the next would be really spicy, the next would just have a really horrible taste that you couldn't rinse out. I can't even describe the taste. It was just awful.
It used to be a thing, I haven't seen trick gum in decades.
