David Bowie's Cameo Appearence

How funny was it to see David's performance in this movie, the english man who puts a gun into Ed's mouth and how Ed didn't hardly react was funny, to bad his cameo didn't have more to it though. It never shows if he died or if the other man died in the struggle.

You're good!

I remember seeing this in the theatres back in '85, and the audience erupted into applause when Bowie appeared for the first time! EVEN though, as it turned out, he was playing a bad guy!

reply

I'm watching it right now and I believe the guy Diana went to see had a penthouse, so they probably ended up splattered all over the sidewalk.

reply

that guy David Bowie fights with in hamid's place is the late music legend Carl Perkins...

reply

...heheh, I wonder if the two of them discussed music in between shots?

david bowie FTW

David Bowie's performance is great. It's so like Ricky Gervais it's unreal. You watch the smiles, eye movement etc it could almost be Ricky.

The Gervais vocal/timing resemblance is incredible. You kinda wonder if Gervais based his personality ON Bowie.

Probably just separated at birth. They do look alike. (Not.)

reply

This is very plausible. Gervais loves Bowie.

reply

In one of the scripts that Gervais wrote for his HBO series Extras, he had a nightclub bouncer describe Bowie’s work as being “tantamount to genius,”’a phrase that has stayed with me over the years, because I agree with it. I disagree with this topic’s premise, though: David Bowie, nee Jones, never made a “cameo” appearance in his life. Neither did Clint Eastwood. Legends don’t make cameo appearances.

I noticed the Gervais similarity too. It's weird, because I've seen Bowie in films back in the day and never noticed this (like, I never thought Gervais reminded me of Bowie). I also saw a Bowie film (Man Who Fell to Earth) since seeing all of the UK Office, and it didn't strike me that way. Maybe he was doing a certain type of British character that Gervais is doing as well?

Yes! I also spotted the Gervais-Bowie similarity. It’s not just the face shape and mannerisms… it’s the way both of them have ‘fangs’ either side of their front teeth.

Bonus? If you want a look at what an elderly Gervais would look like, check out the late Michael Gambon and thank me later…

I always wondered if it was meant as a tie-in with another movie John Landis was planning on doing, but didn't because of how "INTO THE NIGHT" did at the box office.

"What time is Recess?"

reply

Very good...very impressive!

That was my favorite scene. Bowie always steals the show.

This and his role as Pontius Pilate in Last Temptation of Christ are two of his best roles. In Man Who fell to earth he is basically playing himself.

reply

Later in the film, Roger Vadim refers to Bowie's character saying "Yes, Colin was my employee." I would take this to enfer he died in the fight with Carl Perkins.

I thought Carl Perkins was fighting well for a guy who was stabbed almost in the heart. However I would surmise that he would quickly tire from blood loss and that Bowie would overpower him.

As to "Yes, Colin was my employee" it may mean that he was sacked for not doing his job ie. retrieving the stones.

The sequel theory mentioned earlier sounds very plausible to me.

Bowie's cameo was awesome. He took over he film (except when Michelle was in it, of course!).

SPOILERS, much ?

reply

I don't think it counts as a spoiler when the movie is over 30 years old.

reply

Actually, they do.
It’s first-run till you’ve seen it.

reply

Actually, they do not. There is a statute of limitations which adults respect. Grow the fuck up.

reply

Because you say so?
Got it.

Take your pills and sit “the fuck” down, Billy.

reply

So, by your implied reasoning, no one can have an in-depth discussion of any movie, novel or TV show until we have somehow collectively ascertained that THE WHOLE WORLD has experienced it. Prithee, how do you see that working?

You will reply, “Stipulate SPOILERS.” I answer, look around at where you are, and at how lazy, careless, uneducated and/or stupid most posters are. They can’t write a simple declarative sentence. They ask questions about movies and TV shows THEY JUST watched because they have the attention span of a humming bird. Your demand for SPOILER ALERT in a topic about a 30 year-old movie is unreasonable and arrogant.

And my name is not Billy, bitch.
