is it just me or is there only a handful of good werewolf movies?

You are correct, there aren't many but this is definitely not one of them.

Little known fact is that the werewolves in this film used the costumes from the planet of the apes movies from the 1970s. If you look close they look like monkeys.

This is most definitely not one of them. I remember watching it back when it first came to home video in the eighties. My expectations were not especially high, as I know most sequels are nowhere near as good as the originals, but "The Howling" is one of my all time favorite horror films, and I've always loved Christopher Lee as an actor, so I was hoping it would be good.

When it was over I wanted that hour and a half of my life back.

I haven't seen a truly terrifying werewolf movie. I used to have werewolf nightmares almost every night, but it was a different idea of them entirely. They could give you fear paralysis before you even see them, where you can't move or scream. Then they just come and casually dig pieces out of you and eat you alive. They had full human rationality as well.

Without even having seen this one, I can with confidence and remorse agree that there are pitifully few very good to great werewolf movies. More or less in order:

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Ginger Snaps (2000)
The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) - yes, not your typical werewolf movie, but without spoiling anything, it fits nicely in the subgenre
Dog Soldiers (2002)
Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2004)
The Howling (1981)
November (2017)

Of course, there are several quality anthology films that contain werewolf segments, including:

Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)

And then, IMHO, of course, there are a handful of werewolf movies that are watchable and even enjoyable for fans of the genre:

Good Manners (2017)
The Wolf Man (1941)
Wildling (2018)
Wer (2013)
When Animals Dream (2014)
Lyumi (1991)
Howl (I) (2015)
Wolf (1994)
The Company of Wolves (1984)
