I love the rainy, overcast look of the first act.

I also the score that plays during the attic scene and when they first discover the lighthouse/restaurant. I think similar score was used for movies like "The Gate (1987)" "Bloodsport (1988)" and "Mac and Me (1988)." 80s wonder music.

Its look certainly gives the film a lot of atmosphere and character, much moreso than other bright kids adventure movies such as 'honey i srunk the kids' for example. It makes the film unique.
