Billy Cole, the Assistant...

...what exactly was he? If he was a vampire, how was he surviving and living during the daylight, tending to the vampire's home, etc. Then again, the way he died, turning into that green stuff, then ashes. What the heck was he?

He was a familiar. Vampires often will choose a dog or a human that guards their sanctuary in the daytime. As someone else mentioned, he was a cross between a human and a vampire. In vampire lore a human cannot become a vampire until they have consumed the blood of another human. He probably had consumed Jerry's blood but had not fully turned so he was able to guard the sanctuary.

For the last time, what we saw in Billy Cole's death was years of living as a half human servant/ghoul to the vampire. I'm talking ghoul in the modern sense not of troll looking creatures roaming graveyards after dark. The sand and the green and red blood was our evidence of who he was: the undead who had been killed for the last time. He lived for centuries just like Dandridge so seeing him decompose so quickly was expected. It's the same like holding up a very old cookie that appears solid at first glance but when you squeeze it, the cookie crumbles and disintegrates instantly. Damn, let this rest already lol.

I always called him a "familiar" which was just a general term for something creatures of the night use to send out into the normality of the living. My friend says "homunculus" which is a created humanoid similar to a golem. I kind of like that there is no immediate clear answer.
