Amanda Bearse playing a high schooler at age 27?

She looked older than a high school chick (bad casting)

Two years later she would start playing an adult neighbor on Married With Children, they grow up fast.

- John Travolta and the cast of Welcome Back Kotter looked like twenty-five year olds playing teens.
- Henry Winkler, and Ron Howard, playing teens in Happy Days.
- Ralph Macchio well into his twenties playing both Johnny in the Outsiders, and Daniel in The Karate Kid
- Tony O'Dell was in his late twenties playing a preppy teen in Head of the Class
- and Gabrielle Carteris stuck out a bit too much, geriatrically speaking, in playing Andrea while in her thirties on Beverly Hills 90210

The answer is simple: It's easier for productions to cast adults to play school aged teens because there are many restrictions when there are children on a tv/film production set due to labor laws. They are only allowed to work so many hours in a day, and they are required to be "in school" with an onset tutor. By using adults, the filming day can be extended if needed. It's both more convenient, and cost effective. In addition, there is a tendency - with a few exceptions - to not use minors in a film which might be gratuitous in sex or violence as it may be looked upon as exploitive.

If the cast looked like anything I looked like in high school I would not have been cute also I would not have been sexy at all. This movie has sexual aspects to it so it makes much more sense using full-on fully mature adults than real teenagers.

I had no complains about Amanda Bearse playing a teenager. She looked fine to me.

reply

^^ Exactly. She looked a lot younger than 27.

Stockard Channing was 33 years old when she played Rizzo in the movie "Grease".

reply

That was because she was 25 when this was shot. But she also looked younger than that.

17 year olds look about 19 anyway most of the time

Looked like a teen to me, though that could be because Evil looked middle aged. Which is fine, I knew guys in high school with bags under their eyes and thinning hair. People age at different rates.

Hollywood does this all the time. Look at the cast of MTV's Teen Wolf series. The show cannot run for more then a year or two because Tyler Posey, the lead actor in the series, is 28 or 29 years old and he smokes. Also, the same with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most of Buffy's Scooby Gang were well into their twenties and Nicholas Brandon was twenty-four or twenty-five when he got the role.

Yeah. Casting 21-plus year olds as high schoolers was a big trend in the '80s and '90s.

The performances were good but the actors playing the couple were too old.
