i consider this movie to be one of the funniest of all time for one simple reason... i can watch it over and over again and still laugh uproarously... i've never quoted a movie as much either... to me the two funniest scenes are when he's with the airplane mechanics and the guy goes "i'm always asking him what are you doing down in south america, you doing some stuck line or something" ... the mock laugh Fletch(or gordon liddie) gives there is absolutely priceless... then he snaps back within one second "so what does he say?"... 10 quarts of prestone...no...make that quaker state... the other scene that absolutely kills me is with the guy with the shotgun... after he's rambling about don corleone and moe green being out of the tropicana the guy goes "what did you want under the bed"..."i didn't want to have to do this, but i'll have to pull rank on ya... im with the matress police, there are no tags on these mattresses" the look on the guys face trying to comprehend what the hell he just said might be the funniest moment in movie history... aboslutely kills me every time i see it..."landlord asked me to watch out for the place" "well i commend him on his choice"...this movie is tremendous...what are other people's favorite scenes?
Larry....I appreciate your comments...Fletch has had a deep impact on my life too. I do not know if anyone told you this....but he does not ask him if "he is doing some stuck line or something ?? " He asks him if "he's doing some stunt flying or something??" Maybe it will make it even funnier for you.
I'm not at all a Chevy Chase fan, but he was great in this movie, and it's also one of my favorite all-time comedies.
My two favorite scenes are:
1. The car chase - wasn't that Jim-Bob Walton, I believe?
2. The proctologist exam - When I had to get my first rectal exam, I was terrified, which was partly due to this move - "you got the fist in there, doc?"
"i did pull over before. i'll pull over later. alright that's it. you turn your bike in at the next precinct, you're a disgrace to the force." "there's fred, won't he be surprised." "ahhh, there's been a lot of changes in the law, i'm not even sure that's a crime anymore." "Sammy, you're not gonna sing for us are ya?" "Shamoo's got one, borrow his."
Name? Fletch, F. Fletch. And... what do you do for a living Mr Fletch?? I'm a shepherd. Why are you doing this Mr Fletch??? I... like men. I... like to be man handled. I like you. *wink*
Cop: You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to have your face kicked in by me. You have the right to have your balls stomped on by him.
Fletch is showing the pictures he has taken to Gail Stanwyk visiting Utah.
"Here is Alan's signature on the file" "Here is the dog that tried to bite me" "Here is the hotel I stayed at" "Here is the dog again" "Here is my rental card" "Here is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir"
2. The proctologist exam - When I had to get my first rectal exam, I was terrified, which was partly due to this move - "you got the fist in there, doc?"
My first proctologist exam was upon entering the military. The doctor said, "You better get used to the finger exam . . . . . . But not too used to it"

I like when he goes "I havent properly sterilized my hands" the doctor goes "Your not gunna make this guy any sicker" The sound/facial expression Chevy makes is absolutley priceless!
wait a minute, alote of you guys are mentioning scenes from "fletch lives" it seems, i mix it up like that sometime too. i don't confuse these togheter anymore though, becouse this has been airing constantly on showtime, and i check it out everytime. i can't get enough of this. it's so funny from start to end, i must like it alote better now than when i was a kid. then the sequal aired too, i didn't expect much of that, and found that just as hilarious or more. (as for that first time anyway, maybe couse i wasn't used to the jokes.) i mean, i had seen the sequal before, but years ago. funniest scene.. well, as i said, from start to end, one scene i like for some reason is where he goes inside the house and the angry man gaurding the house shows up.
you're causing a snow storm, in my soul, in the winterland came that hot broad, in order for this storm to cause, seems like she's around, around the clock, and made this happen around the heart, snow storm, with sun shine also, pile of love on the sides, plowed around you added salt and also spice, the engine of the tractor, you switched the key and made my heart go on, in my soul, there was a still cold, you went on, and caused a snow storm.
Personally, I think the Fred Dorfman dinner is the funniest...
"....Fred wasn't ashamed to admit to me that he had syphilis, and where he got it, how he got it. And look at him now... Fred you look just great! The nose and face is back to normal....no more drooling.... and hats off to Marge, his wife... Six long weeks at Trembling Hills, no more alcohol or sedatives in her life."
the procto exam by far, especially the Babar line "isn't there a children's book about an elephant called Babar? " i don't have any" "Children"? "Elephant books"
I actually laughed the most at the black actor who is going to introduce someone who is going to hold a speech, and fletch cuts in and starts improvising. The face of that coloured guy is priceless, he's totally surprised. Like "where the hell did that guy come from?!?" Great subtle acting.
well since you're naked you might as well f___ a friend of mine. Paul come in here!
That was the funniest scene for me as well, it was hilarious when I saw it in 1985, and I still laugh every time I see it. So over the top, it dares you NOT to laugh.
