I loved this movie as a kid, but even then, I knew something was amiss.

I was a toddler when this came out, but ended up finding it in the video store when I was around 8. It was one of my faves, but I had the distinct feeling of disappointment regarding the sense of wonder that was thrown out the window for the 3 rd act with the aliens.

A shame that such a good thing was spoiled. This really should have been reworked.

Same here, the aliens ruined the movie for me as a kid in the 80s.

Without those, maybe it would have reached the same status as The Goonies or Stand by Me.

It doesn't help how poor the character design and special effects were.

First half was so good....real fun movie....
Started to get weird when it came to the aliens...still fun..

Yes, for me the fun in the movie is the stuff on Earth as we see them form a triangular friendship, and discover what's going on and build their ship. Once the brother and sister alien come along with all the TV broadcast stuff it is uninteresting.
